Basal cell carcinoma (BCCA) is the most common type of skin cancer. It appears as painless, raised area of skin, which may be shiny with small blood vessels running over it. It may also present as a raised area with ulceration. Risk factors include: chronic exposure to UV radiation (sun exposure), old age, family history of cancer, and chemical (arsenic) exposure.
The patient below has BCCA, and underwent wide excision of the mass with Rush frozen section ( to determine if she has negative margins for the tumor) and Nasolabial flap ( to cover the defect. Three weeks post-op the patient is has a healing wound and happy with the surgical outcome :)
