Lots of parents asked how to help their ‘perfect’ child move past endless people-pleasing. Here are some suggestions for things you can do, and some things to stop doing (if you’re currently doing them).
These are ideas.
They may not be effective for every kid.
The main thing to remember is that our kids learn to do the things they see, and the things they practice. If they see us setting boundaries, self advocating, calmly expressing opinions and disagreement- that opens a door for them. If we then give them opportunities to do those same things, they learn those skills.
If we shut our kids down whenever they disagree, or question things, or set boundaries, or demand respect- they will grow up to be adults who can’t do those things.
And it’s a terrible thing to arrive at adulthood without those skills.
They’re very hard to learn later in life.
