The organization has existed to augment medical emergency personnel in the event of medical emergencies and disasters, prevent mortality and morbidity in the province and to serve as the rapid response group in responding to emergency medical necessities of the public. History:
Emergency Medical Service was seen as an important need to the people of the Philippines since statistics reveals (from DOH) that one of the top 5 causes of mortality are stroke, hypertension and vehicular or road traffic accident. In 2010, the Ifugao State University College of Health Sciences conducted the First Responder's Course to the first year midwifery students with its aim to familiarize the students with basic response to the sick and the injured especially on cardiac arrest, stroke, patient handling and transportation, bandaging and first aid. With its successful implementation with the curriculum of the Health Science, the training grows in demand coming from the students themselves. The interest of the students in training more of their fellow students have come up with a training proposal that was approved by the University President, the office of Special Services and the College of Health Sciences to conduct such medical training. With the dilemma arising from ill-equipped medical personnel, limited training and updates to the healthcare providers, and first aid information and education to the public,the previously trained students came up to organize a group to handle such medical emergencies in the school and the community it serves. The students together with the designated adviser from the Department of Student Services (DSSD) registered the group as an official organization under the DSSD to be called the "Emergency Medical Service-IFSU". The organization in partnership with the BCEMS conducted series of Emergency Medical Responder Course (EMR) that includes Basic Life Support (BLS), Basic Trauma Life Support, Disaster Response and First Aid to the Nurses and Midwives as well as the students,the public and as per request from the DSWD of their out of school youth education program. The success of the trainings conducted in partership with the Baguio City Emergency Medical Service (BCEMS) one of the highly regarded as Best Government Organization Emergency Responder by the Gawad Kalasag of the Office of the Civil Defense and the National Disaster Coordinating Council has grown its popularity in the public and even in the province in conducting the best training as it was for the healthcare providers. In 2012, the EMS-IFSU has expanded their services in assisting the Provincial Health Office (PHO) in conducting medical stanbys and medical missions to the public and Provincial activities. With the organization's vision, mission and objectives, it expanded and registered the official organization's name "Emergency Medical Service-Ifugao" to the Department of Labor and Employment as a legitimate professional organization in the province of Ifugao. At present the Philippine EMS Authority is registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the organization holds its office at the MHO Poblacion West Lagawe, Ifugao, to implement and uphold its VISION, MISION and OBJECTIVES for the country as a model in the advancement of Emergency Medical Services to God and for the people.
