St. Lawrence the Deacon's contributions are deeply rooted in his unwavering commitment to serving the poor and the needy. As a deacon in the Roman Church during the 3rd century, he was responsible for distributing alms and money to the poor and caring for the sick. When Emperor Valerian ordered him to surrender the Church's treasure, St. Lawrence cleverly presented the emperor with the true wealth of the Church - the poor, the sick, widows, and orphans he had been serving. This act of defiance led to his martyrdom, the gruesome slow burning to death by grilling to an open fire pit! That is why his image is oftentimes seen handling a gridiron or a grill with his famous spoken words while being roasted to death: Turn me over on the other side for I am well done.
