CLINICAL CASE OF THE DAY: UNDERSTANDING SARCOPTIC MANGE (SCABIES) ๐พ๐ฉบ
Today at Dr. Art Veterinary Clinic, we diagnosed a confirmed case of Sarcoptic Mange, commonly known as "Scabies" in one of our patients.
๐ THE DIAGNOSIS:
Through a meticulous Skin Scrape procedure, we detected the presence of Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis. This microscopic mite burrows deep into the skin layers to lay eggs, causing intense irritation and distress for the pet.
๐ฉ CLASSIC SIGNS OBSERVED:
The patient presented with classic clinical symptoms, including:
Crusty Ear Pinnae: Noticeable hair loss and thickening at the tips and edges of the ears.
Intense Pruritus: Extreme, non-stop itching that often worsens at night.
Redness & Scaling: Irritated skin patches that can quickly spread across the body if left untreated.
โ ๏ธ IMPORTANT: ITโS ZOONOTIC!
One of the most critical aspects of this case is that the owners also reported experiencing skin itching. Sarcoptic mange is Zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans. While the mites cannot complete their life cycle on humans, they can cause significant temporary irritation and "red bumps" on your skin.
๐ก๏ธ EARLY INTERVENTION IS KEY
If you notice your pet scratching excessively or see crusting around their ears, do not wait. Sarcoptic mange spreads rapidly between pets and can affect your entire family.
Prophylactic treatment is essential! We highly recommend treating all household pets simultaneously to prevent a cycle of re-infection.
