Join us in the third installment of our mental health and well-being webinar series as the NISU - Barotac Viejo Campus Guidance Services Center and NISU-Barotac Viejo Campus Peer Educators, in partnership with the NISU-Barotac Viejo Campus Office of Student Affairs and Services will conduct a webinar titled: Climate Change, Mental Health, and Eco-Anxiety on December 6, 2025 - Saturday (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM - PST/ 7:00 AM - 9:00 AM - GMT) and will be streamed via Zoom and Facebook Live.

Prof. Caroline Hickman, a psychotherapist and one of the "leading voices" in the area of Climate Psychology from the University of Bath in United Kingdom will serve as the resource person for this learning session.

Climate change has emerged as one of the most significant global threats to human well-being, affecting not only physical environments but also communities. Increasingly frequent climate-related disasters, chronic environmental degradation, and disruptions to everyday life have heightened stress, insecurity, and mental-health vulnerabilities across populations. International health agencies emphasize that the psychological consequences of climate change, such as heightened anxiety, trauma, grief, and long-term emotional strain, are often overlooked in public discourse, despite their effects on individual functioning and community resilience. Addressing the mental-health dimensions of the climate crisis is therefore essential, especially in climate-vulnerable countries where environmental instability intersects with existing social and economic challenges.

In this broader ecological and psychological landscape, eco-anxiety has become a well-documented emotional response, characterized by persistent worry, fear, and a sense of powerlessness regarding environmental decline and future uncertainty. Young people, in particular, report elevated levels of climate-related distress as they grapple with concerns about safety, livelihood opportunities, and the habitability of their future world. These emotions, though understandable and often adaptive, can affect concentration, motivation, emotional regulation, and overall mental well-being when left unaddressed. In the Philippine context, where extreme weather events and environmental vulnerabilities are part of lived experience, eco-anxiety takes on an even more immediate and embodied form. Understanding this phenomenon is crucial for developing relevant support systems that validate emotional experiences while promoting adaptive, constructive responses.

Given these realities, the webinar aims to deepen public understanding of the psychological impacts of climate change, highlight current evidence, and equip participants with resilience-building coping strategies. This learning session further gives a collective space for reflection, learning, and action. It also seeks not only to raise awareness but also to strengthen emotional preparedness and community responsiveness, giving everyone the opportunity to find solutions in a space to understand the problem and to reinforce that everyone has a role (and support) in responding to climate concerns.

Join us in the second installment of our mental health and well-being webinar series as the NISU - Barotac Viejo Campus Guidance Services Center and NISU-Barotac Viejo Campus Peer Educators, in partnership with the NISU-Barotac Viejo Campus Office of Student Affairs and Services will conduct a webinar titled: Psychosocial Support for Students with Difficulties in Emotion Regulation on November 29, 2025 - Saturday (12:30 PM - 3:00 PM) and will be streamed via Zoom and Facebook Live.

Dr. Marie Grace A. Gomez from the Counselor Education Area of the University of the Philippines-Diliman will serve as the resource person for this learning session.

In modern schools, emotion regulation is crucial for students' success and well-being. Students with difficulty managing emotions may show impulsivity, anxiety, or reactivity, disrupting focus, relationships, and learning. Research links poor emotion regulation to lower grades, less motivation, and burnout. Without support, these students risk falling behind, feeling isolated, or facing ongoing stress that harms their education.

Additionally, emotion regulation is not only a โ€œsoft skillโ€ as it significantly impacts tangible educational outcomes. Evidence indicates that students who manage their emotions effectively tend to have higher academic self-efficacy, which leads to better grades. In early childhood, the ability to regulate attention, behavior, and emotions correlates with improved school adaptation, including increased classroom engagement and stronger peer and teacher relationships. Enhancing studentsโ€™ ability to understand, interpret, and respond to their emotional experiences lays a foundation for their academic resilience and long-term mental health.

Importantly, emotion regulation does more than prevent adverse outcomes; it actively enhances studentsโ€™ sense of belonging and safety at school. When students are supported in recognizing and managing their emotional experiences, they become better at engaging in collaborative learning, resolving conflicts, and building healthier relationships. Furthermore, classroom observational research has shown that teacher and peer environments that promote regulation are associated with better emotional outcomes and fewer behavioral issues.

Given the increasing mental health challenges that students face due to academic stress, social pressures, and external factors, schools need practical, evidence-based strategies. This webinar aims to equip members of the educational community with intervention approaches to recognize early signs of emotional dysregulation and to incorporate support into everyday school routines. Ultimately, by enhancing studentsโ€™ emotion regulation abilities, we help build self-aware learners who can succeed academically and personally.
