FACTS ABOUT CATARACTS

A cataract is a condition in which the natural lens of your eyes becomes cloudy, causing your vision to be blurry or hazy. The most common cause is aging, which causes normal eye changes after age 40. Vision changes caused by cataracts include blurry vision, seeing double or a ghosted image, extra sensitivity to light, difficulty seeing well at night or needing more light when you read, and seeing bright colors as faded or yellow instead.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information about cataracts.

WAYS TO PREVENT DIABETIC EYE DISEASE

Diabetic eye disease refers to several eye problems that are all caused by diabetes. It includes diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataract, and glaucoma. Diabetic eye disease can be prevented by maintaining good blood sugar control through proper diet, regular exercise, and taking maintenance medications prescribed by your doctor. It’s also important to have periodic eye exams done by an ophthalmologist.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information about preventing and managing diabetic eye disease.

HOW TO STOP CONJUNCTIVITIS FROM SPREADING

1️⃣ Use a clean towel or tissue each time you wipe your face and eyes.

2️⃣ Wash your hands very often. Always wash them before and after you eat, when you go to the bathroom, or after you sneeze or cough.

3️⃣ Try not to touch your eyes. If you do, wash your hands right away.

4️⃣ Bacteria can live in makeup, and this can cause pink eye and even a dangerous infection of the cornea. Do not use eye makeup while your eyes are infected. Replace your makeup if you have an eye infection. Never share eye makeup with others.

5️⃣ Make sure to clean or replace your contact lenses exactly as your ophthalmologist recommends. You should not wear contact lenses until the conjunctivitis goes away.
Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

FIRST AID FOR EYE SCRATCHES

1️⃣ Rinse your eye with saline solution or clean water. This may flush the foreign object from your eye.

2️⃣ Blink repeatedly. Blinking can help get rid of small bits of dust or sand in your eye.

3️⃣ Pull your upper eyelid over your lower eyelid. The lashes from your lower eyelid may be able to brush away any foreign object caught underneath your upper eyelid.

4️⃣ If your eye is sensitive to light because of the scratch, wear sunglasses to make you more comfortable while you heal.

5️⃣ Don't rub your eye. Rubbing your eye can make the scratch worse.

6️⃣ Don't touch your eye with anything.

7️⃣ Don't wear your contact lenses. Wearing your contact lenses will slow the healing process and could cause complications, like contact lens-related infections.

8️⃣ Don't use redness-relieving eye drops, as these can be painful if you have an eye scratch and they won’t help you heal any faster.

WHAT CAUSES CATARACTS?

The most common cause of cataracts is aging. After age 40, normal changes begin to happen in the eyes. That is when normal proteins in the lens start to break down, causing the lens to get cloudy. People over age 60 usually start to have some clouding of their lenses. However, vision problems may not happen until years later.

Other reasons you may develop cataracts include:

1️⃣ having parents, brothers, sisters, or other family members who have cataracts
2️⃣ having certain medical problems, such as diabetes
3️⃣ having had an eye injury, eye surgery, or radiation treatments on your upper body
4️⃣ having spent a lot of time in the sun, especially without sunglasses that protect your eyes from damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays
5️⃣ using certain medications such as corticosteroids, which may cause early formation of cataracts.
6️⃣ smoking

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

CATARACT SYMPTOMS

Cataract symptoms encompass a spectrum of vision changes that can significantly impact daily life. Blurry vision is a common manifestation, making it challenging to perceive details clearly. Individuals with cataracts may also experience double vision or see ghosted images, where objects appear duplicated or shadowed. Moreover, heightened sensitivity to light is a prevalent symptom, making bright lights uncomfortable or even painful.

Night vision is often compromised, leading to difficulties in seeing well in low-light conditions. Reading may become a challenge, necessitating more light for clarity. Another notable symptom is the alteration in the perception of colors, with bright and vivid hues appearing faded or taking on a yellowish tint.

If you are encountering any of these cataract symptoms, it is advisable to seek professional guidance from your ophthalmologist.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY?

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects your eye. High blood sugar levels can result in the blockage of tiny blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina of your eye.

In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms. Symptoms develop when the condition gets worse. These include seeing more and more floaters (spots in your vision), having blurred vision, having vision that changes sometimes from blurry to clear, having poor night vision, having blank or dark areas in your field of vision, noticing colors appear faded or washed out, and losing vision.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

HOW IS DIABETIC RETINOPATHY DIAGNOSED?

Your ophthalmologist will put drops in your eye to dilate (widen) your pupil, so that he or she can look through a special lens to see the inside of your eye. Your doctor may do optical coherence tomography (OCT) to look closely at the retina. In OCT, a machine scans the retina and provides detailed images of its thickness, helping your doctor find and measure swelling of your macula.

Your ophthalmologist may also do fluorescein angiography to see what is happening with the blood vessels in your retina. Fluorescein angiography uses a yellow dye called fluorescein, which is injected into a vein (usually in your arm). The dye travels through your blood vessels. A special camera takes photos of the retina as the dye travels throughout its blood vessels. This will show any blood vessels that are blocked or leaking fluid, as well as any abnormal blood vessels.

Talk to your ophthalmologist for more information.
