World Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Day

In an effort to raise awareness and improve early detection of head and neck cancer, 68 barangay health workers (BHWs) of Vintar Ilocos Norte gathered for an educational lecture led by medical specialists, Dr. Ronald Sadian, Dr. Brian Nikoli Borleo and residents Dr. John Clayton Gregorio, Dr. Anthony Balan, Dr. Leoner Rosales from the Otolaryngology Department of Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center. The session aimed to equip BHWs with essential knowledge to identify early signs of the disease and guide patients toward timely medical intervention.

Today we highlight the crucial role of Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) in the early detection of head and neck cancers — diseases that often begin with silent symptoms like persistent mouth sores, hoarseness, or a neck lump.

🧠 Risk factors include to***co, alcohol, HPV infection, and poor oral hygiene — all common in the communities BHWs serve.

👩‍⚕️ As the first point of contact, BHWs can spot early signs, educate residents, and refer high-risk individuals for timely care. Early detection means better outcomes.

In line with the celebration of World Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Day, last July 27, 2025, with the theme "United by Unique", the department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery of Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical, conducted a lay lecture on Head and Neck Cancer with residents Dr. Balan, Dr. Bognadon, and Dr. Rosales at MMMHMC OPD Covered court.

Early diagnosis can be the difference between life and loss. On this day, we highlight the signs—persistent sore throat, hoarseness, mouth ulcers, or lumps that don’t heal. Know the risk factors: to***co, alcohol, HPV infection, and poor oral hygiene. Awareness leads to action—through screening, timely intervention, and lifestyle change, we can save lives. 💜

"ENTeng Mariano Goes International"

Dr. Dia Nolasco has been awarded the 2025-1 Korea Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery (KORL-HNS) International Visiting Fellow Scholarship during the 99th Annual Congress of KORL-HNS, held from April 18 to 20, 2025, in Suwon, Korea.

During the congress, Dr. Nolasco also presented her E-poster titled "Recurrent Mandibular Mass: A Dilemma of Diagnosis and Management." She was joined by Dr. Nester James Bagasin, who presented his E-poster, "Case Study: Pediatric Tuberculosis Otitis Media," and Dr. Christian Ortiz, who shared his findings in the E-poster "Penetrating Ear Trauma: Surgical and Functional Outcomes in a Gunshot Wound—Case Report."

These presentations took place at the International Congress of Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, coinciding with the 2025 Spring Meeting of the Korean Association of Otorhinolaryngologists.

In observance of World Voice Day, the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery organized an insightful Laymen Lecture on Voice Hygiene and Voice Disorder Prevention on April 16, 2025, held at the MMMHMC OPD Covered Court.

The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of vocal health and educate the general public on how to properly care for their voice. Emphasizing this year’s theme "EMPOWER YOUR VOICE", the lecture focused on the signs and symptoms of voice problems, practical strategies for prevention, and proper vocal hygiene techniques to maintain a healthy voice.

The lecture was delivered in layman-friendly language to ensure accessibility and understanding among participants from all walks of life. The initiative served as a vital step in promoting vocal health awareness, empowering individuals to recognize potential voice issues early, and encouraging proactive care to preserve one of our most essential tools for communication—the human voice.

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery remains committed to continuing its advocacy for voice health, in line with its mission to promote overall well-being in the community.
