SECOND TRIMESTER NOTES FOR MOMS

WHAT TO EXPECT?
🤰baby bump becomes more noticeable as uterus expands
💪🍽️ increased energy and appetite.
👣feel the "quickening," or the first fluttering movements of the baby, around 18 to 20weeks

OTHER POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS:
😥body aches: back pain and crotch pain as the ligaments supporting the uterus stretch
🤰Skin changes: like a dark line down the belly (linea nigra), darker patches on the face (melasma)
👃😬🩸🪮Bleeding gums, nosebleeds, and thicker hair are also due to increased hormones and blood flow

EMOTIONAL CHANGES:
😌fatigue and nausea subsides: less anxious and more settled into the pregnancy
🤰👶start to bond more with the baby as you feel them move
🎭Still with mood swings, vivid dreams, or anxiety about the upcoming labor and parenthood

Medical checkups and tests:
Prenatal appointments every FOUR weeks.
✅Focus:
Weight and blood pressure monitoing
Fundic height measurement
Fetal heartbeat monitoring

Ultrasound Scan:
Offer Congenital anomaly scan (18 to 22 weeks)
Gender Reveal 🎀🧢

Screen for gestational diabetes
🩸other screenings: genetic screening, anemia

Tips for staying healthy
🥗🍳🍖🐟🌾🍊🥑Continue with a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and fiber. Aim for about 340 extra calories per day.
💊Take prenatal vitamins: multivitamins, folic acid and iron, calcium
🧘‍♀️Exercise regularly: Unless advised otherwise, low-impact activities like walking, swimming, and prenatal yoga are safe and can help with aches and pains.
💧🥛Stay hydrated:
🦷🪥Get dental checkups: Increased hormones can cause bleeding gums. Good oral hygiene is important.
⚠️Avoid harmful substances: alcohol, to***co, and recreational drugs, as these can pass through the umbilical cord to the fetus.

👩‍⚕️🤰📝 SECOND TRIMESTER
It spans from week 13 to week 27, is often called the "golden period" of pregnancy. For many, the fatigue and morning sickness of the first trimester subside, and a renewed sense of energy and well-being emerges. During this time, the fetus grows rapidly, and expectant parents may feel the baby's movements for the first time. 👶

Month 4 (Weeks 13–17):
Bones begin to harden, hair and nails develop, and facial features become distinct. The fetus may start sucking its thumb.

Month 5 (Weeks 18–22):
The fetus is covered in a protective, waxy coating called vernix caseosa and a layer of soft, fine hair called lanugo. You will begin to feel movement, and the fetus can hear your voice and other sounds. (20 weeks for first time moms)

Month 6 (Weeks 23–27): The fetus's skin is reddish and wrinkled. Fingerprints and footprints form, and the eyes can open. The lungs are formed but not yet fully functional.

FIRST TRIMESTER HEALTH CHALLENGES

Hormonal changes affect nearly every organ system in the body, leading to a variety of symptoms.

SORE & SWOLLEN BREASTS:
Hormonal changes cause tenderness and enlargement. Breasts become fuller, more swollen, and tender. The areolas may also darken, and veins may become more visible.

NAUSEA & VOMITING:
Often called "morning sickness," this can occur at any time of day. It typically begins around the sixth week and usually subsides by the second trimester, though some women experience it for longer.

FATIGUE:
high levels of hormone progesterone can cause overwhelming tiredness. Extreme tiredness is very common as the body works hard to build the placenta and support the growing fetus.

FREQUENT URINATION:
The growing uterus presses on the bladder, and increased blood volume leads to the kidneys processing extra fluid.

MOOD SWINGS:
Fluctuating hormone levels can cause a rollercoaster of emotions, from irritability to anxiety and euphoria.

FOOD CRAVINGS & AVERSIONS: Changes in taste and smell are common. A person's sense of taste and smell can become much more sensitive, leading to new cravings or a sudden aversion to foods they once enjoyed.

HEIGHTENED SENSE OF SMELL: Many pregnant individuals experience a more sensitive sense of smell, which can trigger nausea or aversions.

SPOTTING:
Mild cramping and spotting, known as implantation bleeding, can occur when the fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall. However, heavy bleeding is a danger sign and should be reported to your OB.

BLOATING & CONSTIPATION:
High levels of progesterone can slow down the digestive system which can cause bloating and constipation.

HEADACHES:
Hormonal shifts and increased blood volume can contribute to headaches during this period.

NASAL CONGESTION & NOSE BLEEDING:
Increased blood volume can cause the mucous membranes in the nose to swell, leading to stuffiness and potential nosebleeds.

METALLIC TASTE:
An unusual metallic or sour taste in the mouth is a symptom some people experience.

HEIGHTENED ANXIETY:
Concerns about the health of the baby, the upcoming changes to one's life, and financial stability can lead to stress and anxiety.

MEMORY PROBLEMS:
Some people report feeling more forgetful or "in a fog," a phenomenon often called "pregnancy brain".
