FCIC Empowers Barangay Health Workers Through Maternal and Newborn Care Training.

The Franciscan College of the Immaculate Conception (FCIC), Community Extension Services with the collaboration of Abbys prolifers Club (College of Midwifery) successfully hosted the Community-Driven Basin Care: Maternal and Newborn Health Training & Workshop for Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) on March 7, 2026, at RLE Laboratory FCIC campus.
The one-day program aimed to strengthen grassroots healthcare by equipping BHWs with essential knowledge and skills in maternal and newborn care. The event began with a welcome talk by Mrs. Aisa C. Porcare, RM, BSM, MMPHA, followed by a series of lectures and demonstrations led by faculty members, student instructors, and coaches.
Sessions covered a wide range of topics, including pregnancy overview, antenatal care essentials, intrapartum and immediate newborn care, postpartum care and immunization, as well as family planning and neonatal care. Each segment provided practical insights, from identifying danger signs during pregnancy and postpartum to safe delivery practices, newborn resuscitation principles, and counseling on family planning methods. Interactive presentations and ice breakers kept participants engaged, while expert coaches such as Mrs. Gemma Quiamco, RM, BSM, MMPHA and Mr. Noemel H. Picson, RN, RM, MMHA, ensured that the training was both informative and hands-on.
The workshop highlighted FCIC’s commitment to extending healthcare education beyond the classroom and into the community. By empowering BHWs with updated knowledge, FCIC strengthens the local health system and ensures that mothers and newborns in Baybay City and surrounding barangays receive timely, quality care. This initiative also reflects FCIC’s mission of fostering collaboration between students, faculty, and community health workers, positioning the institution as a pioneer in community-based health education.
The program concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Noemel Picson, who emphasized FCIC’s dedication to nurturing compassionate healthcare providers and supporting community-driven health initiatives. With this training, FCIC continues to advocate maternal and child health, ensuring that every family in Leyte benefits from safe, informed, and accessible care.

FCIC Midwifery Students Begin Clinical Practicum at Baybay City Immaculate Conception Hospital

The Franciscan College of the Immaculate Conception (FCIC) continues to uphold its commitment to excellence in healthcare education as seventeen second-year Midwifery students begin their Related Learning Experience (RLE) at Baybay City Immaculate Conception Hospital. The clinical practicum runs from January 20 to May 30, 2026, providing students with hands-on exposure in the Outpatient Department (OPD) and the Obstetrics (OB) Ward.

This practicum enables students to apply classroom theories in real clinical settings under the guidance of experienced healthcare professionals. Through direct patient care and supervised clinical activities, students develop essential competencies in maternal health, patient management, and interprofessional collaboration.

The program was made possible through the support of Dr. Christine N. Baldevia, MD, Chief of Hospital II, and Ms. Sonia I. Cutamora, MAN, RN, Chief Nurse, who graciously approved FCIC’s request for clinical affiliation. The practicum is coordinated by Ms. Aisa C. Porcare, MMPHA, BSM, RM, Dean of the College of Midwifery. Clinical supervision is provided by Mrs. Lerma Pernitez, RM, BSM, in the OB Ward and Mrs. Gemmalyn Quiamco, RM, BSM, MMPHA, in the OPD, ensuring close mentorship and quality learning experiences for the students.

The participating second-year Midwifery students rotate through scheduled duties throughout the semester. Their assignments are designed to provide balanced exposure to patient care, clinical procedures, and maternal and child health services, preparing them for the realities of professional midwifery practice.
Beyond technical competence, the practicum reflects FCIC’s mission of forming healthcare professionals guided by Franciscan values of service, humility, and dedication to community well-being. By immersing students in an actual hospital environment, FCIC ensures that future midwives are not only skilled but also compassionate and responsive to the needs of mothers, infants, and families in the Central Visayas region.

Dean Porcare emphasized that this initiative aligns with FCIC’s vision of producing midwives who are competent, compassionate, and committed to advancing maternal and child health. As the practicum progresses, students are expected to gain confidence, strengthen teamwork skills, and deepen their understanding of the vital role midwives play in building safe and healthy communities.
This partnership between FCIC and Baybay City Immaculate Conception Hospital stands as a testament to the institution’s continued dedication to nurturing future healthcare professionals and leaders grounded in excellence and service.
