The second week of July has been declared as the National Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Week. In recognition of the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and to highlight the importance of IPC as a cornerstone of patient and healthcare worker safety, the theme of “IPC: Rising Above and Beyond Adversities” has been chosen in coordination with the Philippine Hospital Infection Control Society, Inc for this year’s celebration.

The Department of Health aims to advocate for the conscious and constant application of IPC principles at all levels of healthcare. Awareness of proper handwashing techniques, social distancing, and appropriate face masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) use are vital interventions that shall curb the spread of infections in health facilities.

Dengue season officially begins in June. Dengue Awareness Month is also observed this month.

Dengue fever is spread by a female Aedes (Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus) mosquito carrying the arbovirus. This insect spreads Zika, Chikungunya, and other viruses. Most tropical and subtropical regions, including the Philippines, have mosquitos that spread dengue.

Dengue fever is one of the fastest spreading vector-borne diseases, with over 100 countries affected. In the Philippines, June has been declared Dengue Awareness Month to raise public awareness of preventing the mosquito-borne viral disease. According to the Department of Health, dengue fever is a year-round public health issue. There were 13,699 documented dengue cases in the Philippines as of March 6, 2021, with 50 deaths. However, according to WHO, these data are lower than the 42,584 cases reported in the same period previous year.

According to the Department of Health, Dengue has six symptoms:
1. A high continuous fever lasting 2-7 days
2. Nausea or vomiting
3. Abdominal pain
4. Body weakness
5. Nose and gum bleeding
6. Persistent red spots on the face, extremities, and trunks
These symptoms appear 3-14 days after the infectious bite.

As most of us say, prevention is always better than cure, but how can we truly protect ourselves and our families from the possibility of getting dengue fever?
Follow the 4S Against Dengue:

1. Search and Destroy Mosquito Breeding Places
2. Self-protection measures include wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts and using insect repellent on a daily basis.
3. Seek Early Consultation
4. Support fogging or spraying only in hotspot areas where an increase in cases has been seen for two weeks.
