IS IT JUST A DRINK?🍺
I recently attended a symposium on alcohol intake and it’s effect on the liver and also on the heart. This is the shocking truth and hopefully would make you think before you drink!
ALCOHOL IS A TOXIN, NOT A TONIC
Many people think that only chronic alcoholics are at risk from alcohol. However, even occasional “binge drinking” can seriously harm the heart and blood vessels.
Binge drinking means consuming a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time — usually 5 or more drinks for men or 4 or more drinks for women on one occasion. This sudden alcohol overload can trigger dangerous conditions such as high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation (“holiday heart syndrome”), stroke, accidents, and even sudden cardiac death.
For patients with hypertension, diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, or underlying heart disease, alcohol intoxication may be especially dangerous. Drunk driving not only puts your own life at risk, but also the lives of others.
Current evidence reminds us:
“There is no completely safe level of alcohol for the heart.”
The good news? The heart can still heal. Reducing or avoiding alcohol can improve blood pressure, heart rhythm, vascular health, and overall quality of life.
Protect your heart. Protect your family. Choose health over intoxication.
