In line with the growing concern over overweight and obesity in the country, the National Nutrition Council (NNC), through Governing Board Resolution No. 4, Series of 2018, approved and adopted its official policy statement on fad diets.
The NNC emphasizes that fad diets are not recommended for weight loss because they may pose potential health risks and dangers. While many fad diets promise rapid weight reduction, these approaches are often restrictive, unsustainable, and may fail to provide the body with adequate nutrients needed for overall health.
Instead of relying on short-term and often extreme dietary practices, the NNC advocates for a holistic, sustainable, adequate, and nutritionally balanced diet. This should be complemented by an active lifestyle and lifelong behavioral modifications that support long-term health and well-being.
The NNC further stresses that addressing overweight and obesity should not rest solely on individual efforts. Personal commitment to healthier eating and regular physical activity must be supported by population-based interventions. These include promoting healthier food environments and food systems, as well as strengthening public awareness through behavior-change communication strategies.
Through this policy, the NNC highlights that the prevention of overweight and obesity requires both individual responsibility and collective action. Sustainable health outcomes can be achieved not through quick fixes, but through informed choices, supportive environments, and long-term healthy habits.
