Some FACTS about AIDS and HIV:
1. What is AIDS?
AIDS, which stands for Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome, is the most severe phase of the HIV infection spectrum. HIV or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, the virus that causes AIDS, specifically attacks the body's immune system. If the immune system is badly damaged, patients will be at high risk of getting severe infections, and if left untreated will eventually lead to death.
2. How is HIV passed from one person to another?
People usually get HIV through s*xual in*******se with an HIV-infected partner and by sharing needles among injection drug users. Untreated HIV-infected mothers can also pass the virus to their babies during pregnancy, birth and even breastfeeding.
3. What are the ways HIV CANNOT be transmitted from one person to another?
HIV CANNOT be transferred through insect bites. Hugging, shaking hands, sharing toilets, sharing plates and utensils, or closed-mouth or βsocialβ kissing also DOES NOT transmit HIV.
4. What are the ways to PREVENT HIV infection?
-engage in monogamous (ONE PARTNER ONLY) s*xual relationship
-practice safer s*x, use of condoms
-AVOID injection drug use
