November is the celebration of National Childrenโ€™s Month per RA 10661 or the National Children's Month Act of 2015. The CWC, DSWD, and NYC, lead the celebration every year, ensuring that programs and activities are child-friendly and beneficial to children.
This 31st NCM focuses on the healthcare and nutrition of children, which emerged from the concerns and challenges affecting children brought by the effects of the pandemic and accelerated inflation rate. To address issues in healthcare and nutrition, the lead agencies collaborate with DOH, NNC, regional agencies, LGUs, civil society organizations, private organizations, parents, and children to forward interventions.
During the month-long celebration, we are encouraging everyone to join and support our programs and activities. All LGUs are encouraged to celebrate NCM in their respective local areas based on DILG MC 2023-152.

Read: NNC Technical Committee approves 49th Nutrition Month theme

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) Technical Committee approved the theme for this year's Nutrition Month campaign: "Healthy diet gawing affordable for all!โ€. The results were further affirmed by the Technical Committee during its meeting on 25 January 2023 after an ad referendum in December 2022. The NNC Technical Committee composed of 17 agencies/organizations representing the member agencies of the NNC, academic and civil society organizations unanimously agreed on the need to support efforts that will enable Filipinos to have greater access to healthy, safe and affordable food.

The Nutrition Month campaign will be an opportunity to highlight government efforts together with partners on its food and nutrition security policies and programs. The theme is in line with the Philippine Development Planโ€™s targets of reducing vulnerability and protecting purchasing power of Filipinos by expanding access of consumers to affordable, safe, and nutritious food and the attainment of a sufficient and stable supply of food commodities.

This yearโ€™s Nutrition Month aims to 1) engage consumers to support improvements in levels of diet quality towards sustainable healthy diets, 2) generate participation of stakeholders at various levels on actions towards enabling access to affordable sustainable healthy diets, and 3) call support for the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2023-2028 as the framework for action to improve nutrition security.
The campaignโ€™s key messages for individuals and families, communities includes 1) Start children on a healthy diet with exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months and continued breastfeeding up to two years and beyond with appropriate complementary feeding, 2) Eat a variety of unprocessed or minimally processed foods, balanced across food groups, while restricting highly processed food and drink products, 3) Establish food gardens as additional source of food, and 4) Buy food from local farmers.

For policy-makers, program managers and legislators, the campaign calls for 1) Increase availability of nutritious foods such as by giving subsidies, product reformulation and improved food value chains, 2) Reduce the availability of unhealthy food through taxation, restrictions on marketing and consumer education, 3) Rechannel resources to agriculture to enable access to affordable nutritious and safe food, and 4) Implement the PPAN 2023-2028 by scaling up food and nutrition security interventions.

From 2019 to 2021, FAO reported that 5.3 million Filipinos were severely food insecure, while 48 million more experienced moderate or severe food insecurity. The 2021 Expanded National Nutrition Survey showed that 33.4 % and 2% of Filipino households are moderately and severely food insecure, respectively. Among these, thirty-five percent (35%) of respondents said they have been unable to eat healthy and nutritious food for the past year. The same survey revealed that 9 our of 10 across all age groups were not able to meet the 100 % of the recommended energy intake. Factors affecting food security among Filipino households are insufficient income, high prices of food commodities, unemployment, and access to food. Through mobilization of various sectors, Nutrition Month will be able to call attention to increase and improve interventions along food and nutrition security.

With the announcement of the Nutrition Month theme, the NNC encourages national and local governments, NGOs, civil society, and communities to plan for the campaign in July and include sustaining activities for the rest of the year. Presidential Decree 491 declared July as the nationwide Nutrition Month celebration, with NNC leading the campaign. For more details on the 2023 Nutrition Month celebration and how you or your organization can participate in the campaign, regularly visit www.nnc.gov.ph and the National Nutrition Council (Official) or message us at info@nnc.gov.ph
