The Philippine public hospital emergency room is a battlefield. A single doctor may face dozens of patients at once, children with fevers, elderly struggling to breathe, accident victims crying out in pain, families desperately asking for help. The scene is chaotic, urgent, and overwhelming. Yet behind the white coat and stethoscope is a human being, a doctor who feels, who tires, who breaks.
In a system where doctors are often treated as if they are machines, it is easy to forget that they, too, are flesh and blood. They push themselves past exhaustion, not because they are robots, but because lives depend on them.

The strain on doctors and nurses is not simply the result of patient volume. It is the symptom of a deeper, systemic disease: a healthcare system weakened by decades of underfunding and corruption.

In the midst of this reality, patients and their watchers must also be mindful. Doctors understand suffering, they dedicate their lives to healing. But watchers must remember: the doctor attending to your loved one is also attending to many others.

The World Health Organization recommends 1 doctor for every 1,000 people. In the Philippines, we only have about 3 doctors for every 10,000 Filipinos in many provinces. This forces a handful of doctors to care for entire communities. Less than 5% of the national budget is allocated to healthcare, far below the WHO recommendation of at least 10%. Funds are often mismanaged, with corruption scandals in health agencies draining resources.

Doctors are not robots. They are human beings doing their best within a broken system. While we call for accountability from government leaders who have neglected and corrupted healthcare, we must also call for compassion from patients and watchers.
