A person’s hearing loss can be categorized according to degree of severity. It can either fall as mild, moderate, severe or profound hearing loss. Audiologists and other hearing professionals use these terms; the four degrees of severity of hearing loss according to World Health Organization (WHO) are defined as follows:

Mild means that the person is having difficulty hearing or not being able to hear sounds that fall below 25dB or the normal range.

Moderate means that the person is having difficulty hearing or not being able to hear sounds that fall below 40dB.

Severe means that the person is having difficulty hearing or not being able to hear sounds that fall below 60dB.

Profound means that the person is having difficulty hearing or not being able to hear sounds that fall below 80dB.

Only a certified hearing care professional can accurately diagnose your level of hearing loss and prescribe the best treatment options.

What if your parents have hearing loss, will you inherit it too?

Half of your genes come from each parent. But if any of the inherited genes are mutated (defective), hearing loss is a possible outcome. It all depends on the type of chromosome that would be affected (X or Y) and whether it is dominant or recessive. Hereditary hearing loss can occur at birth or at any stage in a person’s life.

Don't be scared, it is never a bad idea to learn if you are having hearing loss symptoms. There are solutions. When you hear clearly, life sounds brilliant!
