THE STATE OF YOUTH SPORTS

Look at the lines.

Packed lines for:
• Chasing exposure
• Team hopping
• Social media highlights

Short lines for:
• Player development
• Strength & fundamentals

Everybody wants to be seen.
Not everybody wants to be built.

The truth?
Exposure without development is a dead end.

Coaches don’t recruit your mixtape.
They recruit production.
They recruit consistency.
They recruit bodies that can handle the physicality of the next level.

The crowded lines aren’t always the right ones.

Choose your line carefully.

Why do basketball players ice their knees and wear patellar straps?

Basketball involves repeated jumping, quick stops, and rapid direction changes, which place high stress on the patellar tendon (often called jumper’s knee). Because of this, patellar tendon issues are more common in jumping sports like basketball than in football/soccer, which relies more on continuous running than vertical loading.

• Ice is commonly used to help reduce pain and swelling after games.

• Patellar straps help redistribute load on the tendon and can reduce pain during activity.

Evidence shows that igher rates of patellar tendinopathy in basketball and other jumping sports. Patellar straps can reduce tendon stress and pain. Cryotherapy helps with short-term symptom relief

College-Ready Body vs. Not College-Ready

In today’s college basketball landscape, the body matters.
Not because skill isn’t important but because skill has to survive physical pressure.

With the transfer portal loaded with physically developed athletes, college coaches no longer need to invest years building a freshman’s body. If two players have similar skill, the one who is stronger, more durable, and physically prepared gets the opportunity.

Genetics do play a role. Some athletes naturally add size and strength faster than others, and that part isn’t always controllable.
But what is controllable is effort.

For every athlete, especially those not genetically gifted, the weight room must be a priority. Strength training, nutrition, and consistency are the difference between being a project and being ready.

Coaches don’t recruit potential alone.
They recruit readiness.

Skill gets noticed.
Work ethic builds the body.
Readiness earns trust.

𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐚 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲-𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?

The answer might surprise you.

Some of the most serious cardiac conditions in athletes are silent with no symptoms, no warning signs, and no decline in performance… until a catastrophic event happens.

That’s why pre-participation cardiac screening matters.
It helps identify athletes who look healthy but may be at risk, allowing timely intervention, monitoring, or activity modification that can literally save lives.

That said, while ECG screening is ideal, important questions still remain:

- At what age should routine ECG screening start?

- How often should ECGs be repeated?

- Who truly benefits most? youth athletes, elite competitors, or both?

These are ongoing debates in sports cardiology, balancing early detection, cost, accessibility, and the risk of false positives.

What’s clear is this:

Doing nothing is no longer acceptable.
The challenge now is refining when and how we screen so we can protect athletes without unnecessary barriers to sport.

Because peak performance should never come at the cost of an undetected heart risk.

Kicking off the year with lessons, reflection, and intention grounded in learning, growth, and new perspectives.

Long before medicine became my profession, cooking was already my quiet passion. During nursing school, I spent years trying to convince my parents to let me shift to Hospitality Management, wondering what life would look like if I had taken a different path.

That love for food started early. In high school, I won our school's cooking contest. I also placed third in a local community cooking contest against professional cooks and chefs. I ran small inasal food stalls during university events, where I learned patience and hard work, and life surprised me by introducing my future wife.

Life led me to medicine. Along the way, I came to understand how deeply food shapes health, healing, and everyday living, far beyond what we often realize.

Now, I am taking formal training in Culinary Medicine. It feels like coming home, bringing together everything I have learned to help people make better food choices and live healthier, more intentional lives.

Some passions wait quietly until the right time. It doesn't disappear. They grow, evolve, and find their moment. Here is to learning, growth, and better food choices, one plate at a time.

As health professionals, we hold the unique responsibility of shaping the future of sports and wellness among our youth. The work we do today lays the foundation for stronger, healthier, and more resilient athletes tomorrow.

Today I had the opportunity to speak on the importance of Preparticipation Evaluation (PPE) and Post-Event Evaluation (P*E) in Sports Medicine during the Philippine Academy of Physicians in School Health, Inc. 2nd Midyear Convention held at Diversion 21, Iloilo City.

It was a meaningful moment to share how athlete evaluation goes beyond mere medical clearance rather an ongoing process of risk mitigation, performance optimization, and long-term health protection. By integrating PPE and P*E into school health systems, we move closer to creating safer sporting environments and elevating athlete care through evidence-based practice.

I never thought this day would come! A moment where a simple vision turns into a purposeful mission.

Today marks the first step of a long journey ahead, as we work together toward building a system that will strengthen athlete care, enhance performance, and bring sports medicine closer to our grassroots and educational community. I am sincerely grateful to everyone who believed, contributed their expertise, and embraced this mission wholeheartedly.

We still have a long road ahead, but with purpose, collaboration, and commitment, I am confident that we are moving in the right direction.

The biggest gap in youth coaching isn’t talent.
❌ It isn’t facilities.
❌ It isn’t an opportunity.

It’s this:
➥ Players are being taught actions before they understand ideas.

We teach “press here”, “pass there”, “run this way”.
But very few environments teach:
• What triggers the press
• Why the space opened
• How to recognise cues
• When to break structure
• What changes the decision

When players understand ideas, they adapt.
When they only know actions, they freeze the moment the picture changes.

The modern game demands thinkers.
If players are guessing, it’s not development.
It’s memorisation.

The priority is simple:
Teach ideas first.
Actions come after.

That’s how understanding grows.

I’ve always believed in making the most of every opportunity that comes our way and being considered to serve the national team is already a tremendous honor and privilege. 🇵🇭

Still, I hold deep respect for the processes and prior commitments that guide our work. True service means knowing when to step forward and when to wait, so we don’t compromise the team’s preparation amid necessary clearances and transitions.

I remain hopeful and ready. When the next opportunity arises, I’ll be more than willing to serve the flag with pride.

Fortunate to have this team during the Learners’ Convergence Philippines and National Career Expo 2025.

Your compassion, teamwork, and quiet sacrifices kept every learner and delegate safe and cared for throughout the event. You’ve shown what true service beyond duty looks like. Grounded in heart and guided by purpose.

To our leaders and organizers, thank you for the trust and support.

Proud to serve with a team that turns care into action and purpose into impact.
