This 10-๐’…๐’‚๐’š ๐’•๐’“๐’‚๐’Š๐’๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ was no walk in the park โ€” it was draining in every aspect: physically demanding, mentally tough, and emotionally stirring. Yet, in the face of exhaustion, they pushed through and proved that true leaders rise above the pressure.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) joins the entire Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in remembering a pivotal moment in humanitarian history; the Battle of Solferino: the event that sparked the founding of the Red Cross Movement.

in history, a bloody and decisive battle took place in Solferino, in the former Kingdom of Lombardy (now part of Italy). ๐Ÿ“–

This battle was part of a larger struggle to liberate the Italian states from Austrian control and unite them into a single nationโ€”what we now know as Italy. On that day, the French Empire and the Kingdom of Sardinia joined forces against the Austrian Empire in a grueling confrontation.

After fifteen hours of fierce combat, 6,000 soldiers lost their lives, and more than 35,000 were wounded or missing.

A Swiss businessman named Henry Dunant, who happened to be in Solferino on business, witnessed the aftermath of this human tragedy. Deeply moved by the suffering of the wounded left without care, he took it upon himself to organize help and call on local civilians to assist the dying and injuredโ€”regardless of which side they fought for.

Out of this horrific battle, Dunant planted the seeds of a powerful idea. His experience led to the founding of:

โ™ฆ๏ธ A neutral and impartial organization to protect and assist those affected by armed conflictโ€”now known as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
โ™ฆ๏ธ Voluntary relief societies to care for the woundedโ€”eventually becoming the National Societies like the Philippine Red Cross
โ™ฆ๏ธ A set of principles and laws to guide these organizationsโ€”enshrined in the Geneva Conventions.

As we remember the Battle of Solferino, we honor the legacy it createdโ€”a global humanitarian movement committed to compassion, neutrality, and saving lives in the midst of conflict.

RCY Council Meeting was a resounding successโ€”filled with meaningful collaboration, innovative ideas, and a renewed commitment to our shared goals and responsibilities as youth leaders. The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by all participants truly reflect the spirit of service and leadership that defines our council.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who took part in this productive gathering, especially our CSR on Health/RCY, Ms. Janice Cagape, LPT, for her invaluable guidance and support. Your presence and insights greatly contributed to the success of our meeting.
