Have some of the crunchy stuff today!
CORRECTION 1: The text on the photo should read “Cucumber compound is cytotoxic to cancer cells… up to 90% suppression in a test tube… Ethan Evers, The Eden Prescription.
CORRECTION 2: The original post was fact-checked and found to be unclear on where the killing of cancer cells was happening. It was happening in a test tube in a lab study, not in a human body. Also, a direct association between cucumber consumption and lung cancer risk is not supported by the study from India due to confounding of various foods. I have therefore reformulated the post as follows:
“Cucurbitacin B, a compound found in cucumber and other members of the Cucurbitaceae family, has shown intriguing potential in the fight against cancer. When researchers added the compound to human lung cancer cells in a test tube, it slowed their growth by up to 90% and suppressed their ability to spread (migration) by 88%. The authors of the study even mentioned that Cucurbitacin B may be a drug candidate for treating lung cancer. We don’t know if consuming cucumbers would have the same anticancer effects in the human body. But intriguingly, three observational studies have found associations between cucumber consumption and lower cancer risk of the stomach, breast and colon. Such studies cannot confirm that cucumber was the causative agent in lowering cancer risk (only fully-randomized, placebo controlled clinical trials could do that) but they do support cucumber as being part of a healthy and varied diet rich in fruits and vegetables. These studies can be found at Pubmed under PMID 30759826, PMID 3793261, PMID 4030136 and PMID 25772260.
