The Health Education Week, set for the second week of October, is mandated by Proclamation No. 255, s. 1967. The law serves as a vital call to action, recognizing that a well-informed citizenry is essential for a strong nation, and that promoting health consciousness is key to achieving optimal public health.

This week is a perfect time to take charge of your wellness. The message is clear: Let's broaden our health knowledge and put it to good use!

Here's a simple guide to being proactive:
✅ Be Informed: Get your reliable health facts! Follow official channels like the Department of Health (DOH) to stay updated.
✅ Be Active: Commit to the fundamentals—practice T.E.D. (Tamang Pagkain or Proper Nutrition, Ehersisyo or Exercise, and Disiplina or Self-Control) to keep your body vibrant and healthy.
✅ Be Checked: Don't wait for symptoms. Regularly consult your healthcare provider for check-ups and preventative care to protect yourself against illness.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Prioritizing your health is vital. Make regular breast cancer screening a routine. This annual observance was sought to be institutionalized by House Bill No. 716 during the 17th Congress of the Republic of the Philippines.

Early detection is key. Consult an expert immediately if you observe any of these symptoms:
✅ A lump, indentation, or change in the skin of the breast
✅ Soreness, retraction, or change in ni**le color
✅ Changes in breast shape or unevenness in size or height
✅ Bloody discharge from the ni**le

Prioritize your health and well-being. Regular screening can make a significant difference. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The Department of Health Center for Health Development – Northern Mindanao (DOH CHD-NM), in collaboration with the Regional Local Government Unit – Mobilization and Technical Assistance Team (RLGU-MobTAT), facilitated the Internal Verification of municipalities’ performance for the Philippine Multisectoral Nutrition Project (PMNP) using the PBG Tranche 2 Verification Tool on September 26, 2025, at the DOH CHD-NM Compound in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental.

This activity was aligned with the directives of Department Memorandum 2024-0506: Omnibus Implementing and Monitoring Guidelines for the PMNP Key Performance Areas (KPAs) for CY 2025.

Through the verification process, municipalities’ progress on performance-based indicators was carefully assessed, identifying those most likely to be met and those that may only be partially achieved or least likely to be accomplished. For areas needing improvement, the DOH CHD-NM will provide technical assistance and targeted support to help municipalities catch up and meet the desired performance level.

The results of this verification will be consolidated by the Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) and submitted to the DOH National Project Management Office (NPMO) as part of strengthening accountability and ensuring the effective delivery of nutrition-focused interventions under the PMNP.

This initiative reflects the Department’s continued commitment to supporting LGUs in achieving measurable outcomes that improve the health and nutrition of communities in Northern Mindanao.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The Department of Health Center for Health Development – Northern Mindanao (DOH CHD-NM), through the Non-Communicable Diseases Cluster, continues its commitment to eye health with the conduct of the Vision Screening Training Using the LEA Chart on September 25 to 26, 2025, at De Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental.

With blindness and vision impairment affecting millions worldwide, early detection and intervention are crucial. This hands-on training provided healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills to detect eye problems early and ensure proper referral and care—so that no one is left in the dark.

The activity empowered doctors and nurses from the LGUs of Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental with essential skills to protect and preserve vision in their communities.

Aligned with Republic Act 11358 or the National Vision Screening Act of 2019, the training also capacitated school nurses and Prevention of Blindness Program (PBP) coordinators to understand eye problems, identify their causes and risk factors, perform accurate vision screening using the LEA Chart, and follow proper referral protocols for pupils suspected of visual impairments.

Through empowered local health providers, DOH CHD-NM continues to build a responsive primary health care system that protects vision and promotes overall well-being.

Boosting Universal Health Care via FOURmula One Plus (F1 Plus)

By Leticia Dolores II Culanag-Abao

Good health and well-being is regarded as an important factor towards human development and improving ones’ way of life. Thus, access to primary and tertiary quality healthcare, both the preventive and curative sides, are among the topmost concern of the agency in order to realize the new vision of DOH for the country: ‘Filipinos as the healthiest people in Southeast Asia by 2022, and Asia by 2040’.

This is what the new leadership of Secretary Francisco T. Duque III wanted to uphold as his priorities in accelerating the implementation of the Universal Health Care with a theme ‘Boosting Universal Health Care via FOURmula One Plus (F1 Plus)’, which he espoused few years ago as the former Health Chief. With its new strategic focus, the DOH shall embark on institutionalizing a people-centered Service Delivery Network by engaging the sick, engaging the healthy, engaging the affected population and engaging the special groups; and leading a whole-of-society collaboration at all levels to help people live healthy by combating top risk factors through diet, physical activity, smoking cessation campaigns and prevention of road traffic injuries while sealing productive and collaborative engagements with a multiple range of stakeholders.

Through these efforts, continuation of priority health programs begun by former Health Secretary Paulyn Jean Ubial under the Philippine Health Agenda (PHA) was reaffirmed by the new chief which will be merged in one strategic approach through FOURmula One Plus.
