Based on the World Health Organization (WHO), millions of deaths occur every year due to Cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Up to this date, CVDs remain the number one leading cause of death not only in the Philippines, but also around the world.
WE ARE WHAT WE EAT
The food we choose to eat directly affects our health, our wellbeing, and the environment. Different articles indicate that food impacts our mental and physical dispositions, and affects the integrity of our body (including the skin, muscles, and immune system).
HEART-HEALTHY FOODS
It is important to eat lean meat as it is a good source of folate, vitamin B6 and B12. These vitamins are important for heart health because they lower the levels of homocysteine in our blood2. High levels of homocysteine can inflict damage to the inner arterial linings. An injured artery will be more susceptible to plaque formation.
They recommend for us to consume only low fat or fat free milk products to avoid further increase in our already high lipid profile and to incorporate healthy fats like omega 3 such as docosahexaenoic−(DHA) and eicosapentaenoic−acid(EPA)3. These are essential fatty acids, meaning they cannot be produced by the body:
Docosahexaenoic - is an omega-3 fatty acid that is a primary structural component of the human brain, cerebral cortex, skin, and retina. In one study, DHA taken for six months decreased heart rate and improved memory and learning in healthy, older adults with mild memory complaints.
Eicosapentaenoic- is obtained in the human diet by eating oily fish or fish oil such as mackerel, salmon and sardine, and various types of edible seaweed and phytoplankton. A steady consumption of EPA supplements may provide a variety of cardiovascular benefits, particularly the support of arterial wall elasticity, maintaining healthy circulation, heart function and blood clotting.
They are found in food sources such as plants like kale and spinach, seeds such as walnuts, and fishes like salmon and sardines. These fats can help combat cardiovascular diseases by lowering Triglyceride(TG) levels. High levels of TG’s can distort the size and functions of other particles in the blood
For most individuals, it can be difficult to complete these nutrients by food consumption alone specially with how fast−paced society is. Luckily new ways have been developed to help us achieve a better health and a better life.
CORE Q10 PLUS is a cardio-protective supplement that is an effective antioxidant for the prevention of atherosclerosis and myocardial defect, strengthens the cardiac muscle and lowers blood pressure. It is also rich in dietary fiber that lowers cholesterol, fish oil and gingko biloba to increase blood circulation, and folic acid with B complex to lower homocysteine levels.
