THE PSYCHOLOGY OF LEADERSHIP: LEAD BY WHAT MOVES THEM

True leadership starts with this truth: people are moved by different things.

Some are motivated by growth—they want challenge, not comfort. Others are driven by autonomy, recognition, or just security. But here’s the trap—most leaders lead others based on what would motivate themselves.

That’s not leadership. That’s projection.

Remember the story of the great leader who fed thousands? They followed him the next day—for more food. But he challenged their intentions, and most left. Why? Their motivation was survival. But a few—like Peter—stayed. They weren’t there for bread. They were there for truth, challenge, transformation.

Great leaders discern the difference.

You don’t lead every follower the same way. You don’t raise every child the same. You don’t love every partner the same.

If someone is motivated by growth, a bigger paycheck won’t inspire them. They need space to evolve. If they crave autonomy, micromanagement will crush them, no matter how “generous” you are.

So here’s the leadership shift:
Stop asking, “Why don’t they respond?”
Start asking, “What moves them?”

Because when you speak to someone’s true motivation, they don’t just follow—you unlock who they’re meant to become.
