Cancer care is not measured by knowledge and technology alone—
it is measured by access.

As shared by Jose Rhoel C. De Leon, MD—Surgical Oncologist and Breast Surgeon, Immediate Past President of the Philippine College of Surgeons, and Director of the PCS Cancer Commission Foundation:

“It is not just about providing quality care, expanding our expertise, or installing cutting-edge technology and building facilities. It is about ensuring that every Filipino can access that care—reducing both the disease burden and the economic burden on our families. Help us shape the future of cancer care in the Philippines. See you at the Philippine National Cancer Summit 2026!”

Excellence means nothing if it cannot be reached.
Innovation matters most when it is accessible.

A personal history of advanced polyps or hereditary syndromes like Lynch syndrome also requires earlier and more frequent surveillance.

Better cancer care doesn’t happen by chance—it happens when communities come together. 💜

Over the past years, the Philippine National Cancer Summit has brought together leaders, advocates, professionals, and institutions to push cancer care forward—shaping policies, strengthening partnerships, and centering the voices that matter most.

In 2026, we move further.

The PCS Cancer Commission Foundation (PCS CanCom) invites changemakers across government, healthcare, civil society, patient groups, academe, the private sector, and advocacy communities to be part of a growing cancer care community committed to real, lasting impact.

This is where conversations turn into collaboration—and collaboration into real change for patients, families, and survivors.

Let’s move from intention to action, ensuring that every Filipino affected by cancer is seen, heard, and supported.

A patient asked… Does it mean that if my breast cancer is ER (estrogen) and PR (progesterone) positive / the cancer is caused by hormones?

The answer is not entirely. Because breast cancer can be caused by many pathways like metabolic signaling, inflammation and immune function, mitochondrial health, growth factor signaling, cell repair and death (apoptosis) and hormonal pathway brought about by damage or mutations. So - hormonal pathway is just ONE of a complexity of causes of cancer development. However, receptor positivity is a marker of response to hormonal manipulation and a prognostic factor as well.

Colorectal Cancer is now the most common cause of cancer death among young adult. But Breast Cancer remains to be the most common among women (chart D) although the trend has decreased probably due to early diagnosis and more appropriate treatment.

In a recent publication at the JAMA - research showed that for the 50 year old population and below - colorectal cancer is now the most common cause of cancer death.
Note as well a decreasing trend in most cancer sites, except for Colorecral Cancer which has skyrocketed for the last 30 years.
