Our optometrist, Dr. Cherryl Torres-Yang was featured in the Australian College of Optometry.
Dr. Torres-Yang has completed advanced courses and trainings in Australia and U.S. on optometry specialization that focuses on binocular vision disorders. This equipped her with the knowledge on the standardized non-surgical treatment that benefit Filipino patients suffering from strabismus.
Cherryl Torres is a practising optometrist in the Philippines, where she is working to challenge the misconception that optometrists are simply ‘eyeglasses measurers’. Cherryl is determined to demonstrate the expertise and impact of optometrists as highly skilled healthcare professionals who play a significant role in improving the lives of patients, particularly children.
“For me, there is nothing better than helping children who have problems with vision development. This course has helped me improve my knowledge and kept me up to date with current evidence-based practice. This is especially true in cases of strabismus and binocular vision disorders. This course has given me the confidence in handling children where various clinical techniques are needed to elicit an accurate response, which is already challenging given the fact that they are kids.
My favourite part of the course was the clinical placement which I completed directly at ACO in Carlton as it exposed me to various paediatric cases and clinical techniques. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from expert mentors who were more than willing to share every bit of knowledge they had.
Applying the skills I learned from the course while it was ongoing made a huge difference in my practice. It has significantly reduced, if not eliminated, referrals to ophthalmologists, especially in challenging strabismus and binocular vision cases where I previously felt unable to provide the care the patients needed.”
The Advanced Certificate in Children’s Vision starts on 10 February 2025 and is open to all registered optometrists in Australia & New Zealand.
