โ—๏ธPARENTS PLEASE BE AWARE โ—๏ธ

Some clinics are using the brand Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Special Education to their services as it is unethical and punishable under the law.

Remember: There's no such thing 3-in-1 service (OT, Speech and Sped) as this is only a marketing strategy. ๐Ÿ˜

Let's be transparent and serve only the best and what is right to our clients especially the small ones.

๐Ÿ“š Did you know that Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are still quite rare in the Philippines?

Currently, only four institutions in the entire country offer this specialized program, each with its own rich history and distinctive approach to training future SLPs.

๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฎ (๐—จ๐—ฃ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฎ): UP Manila holds the distinction of being the first university to offer an SLP program in the Philippines, starting way back in 1978. Nestled under the College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP), this program laid the groundwork for SLP education, setting high standards and producing some of the country's finest professionals in the field. ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ง๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜€ (๐—จ๐—ฆ๐—ง): Fast forward 31 years to 2009, when UST opened its doors to aspiring SLPs. UST's program brought a fresh wave of enthusiasm and innovation, offering students new opportunities to delve into this critical healthcare field. ๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ฏ๐˜‚ ๐——๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜€' ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† (๐—–๐——๐—จ): Breaking the Luzon monopoly, CDU began its SLP program in 2012. This move was a game-changer, bringing high-quality SLP education to the Visayas region and making it more accessible to students outside Luzon.

๐——๐—ฒ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—œ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐˜๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฒ (๐——๐—Ÿ๐—ฆ-๐—›๐—ฆ๐—œ): Just two years following CDU, in 2014, DLS-HSI joined the ranks, further expanding the reach of SLP education. This addition provided more options for students eager to join this noble profession. Learn more: https://www.dlshsi.edu.ph/academics/college-rehabilitation-sciences/

While three of these programs are based in Luzon (UP Manila, UST, DLS-HSI), CDU stands alone in Visayas ๐ŸŒ Unfortunately, Mindanao still awaits its first SLP program, highlighting a need for further expansion to ensure nationwide access to SLP training and services.

With such a specialized and limited number of programs, it's crucial to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be an SLP. If they didnโ€™t graduate from UP Manila, UST, CDU, or DLS-HSI, they might be a ๐—ฝ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ผ-๐—ฆ๐—Ÿ๐—ฃ ๐Ÿšจโš ๏ธ

You can verify if someone is licensed to practice speech pathology via: https://online.prc.gov.ph/Verification , and if you encounter a pseudo-SLP, report them to pasp.ethics@gmail.com to protect the integrity of the profession and ensure the highest standards of care for those in need.

Stay informed and make sure to consult only qualified professionals to get the best care possible. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Big movements come first! This is because strong core and upper body muscles are the building blocks for good hand control. Before a child can use their hands well (fine motor skills), they need to develop:

Postural control: This means being able to hold their body steady in different positions, like sitting upright.
Forearm rotation: This allows them to turn their hands over for tasks like grasping a cup.
Strength and stability: This applies to the shoulders, elbows, and wrists for controlled hand movement.
Thumb separation: This lets them use their thumb and fingers independently for more precise tasks.

These skills develop in a specific order, with gross motor skills like rolling and standing coming first. Playground activities like climbing and swinging help build this foundation for future fine motor skills like writing. The weather is nicer so go outside and play on the playground, the perfect place to developing those gross motor skills.
