Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja

Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja Chartered in 1988, we work to improve the world, one child and one community at a time.

The Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja is a member of Kiwanis International, a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. It was founded on 9 Aug 1988 (charter date) as an all-female club jointly sponsored by the Kiwanis Clubs of Dagupan City, Sombrero Calasiao and Amputi Layag. That makes it one of the oldest clubs in the Philippine Luzo

n District and the only all-female club in the Division. The club was named after Princess Urduja, a legendary warrior princess who led an army of men and women, and personally took part in the fighting. According to accounts, the name Urduja appears to be Sanskrit in origin, and a variation of the name “Udaya”, meaning “arise” or “rising sun”, or the name “Urja”, meaning “energy”, “life force” or “breath”. Princess Urduja was described as hospitable and generous, skilled in sword fighting and horseback riding, and had dreams of leading an expedition to other countries. Historical accounts and academic discussions include Pangasinan as one of the potential areas of origin of Urduja. Her prowess, characteristics and accomplishments serve as the inspiration to the Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja which hopes to equal, if not exceed, the influence and impact of Urduja to the community.

“Change. But start slowly, because direction is more important than speed.”

The Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja quietly continues to work through November with service projects, inter-organizational coordination, and club meetings.

*World Kindness Day*
The club participated in the by doing random acts of kindness on 13 Nov 2024. We normally don't document such random acts with random people but for this day.

*Kiwanis One Day*
The club joined Pangasinan-based clubs of Division 1A in its Kiwanis One Day activity, , on 16 Nov 2024 at CityMall, San Carlos City, Pangasinan. The club also teamed up with the Kiwanis Club of Eastern Pangasinanin planning and preparing games for DepEd Tayo Central 1 ES Special Needs Education students. Visit the KI PLD Division 1A page for further details on this activity.

*National Reading Month/Day and National Children’s Month*
The club couldn’t pass up the opportunity to conduct a service project within one of the most important months of the year — the Children’s Month. The club conducted two storytelling sessions at the DepEd Tayo Mancup ES on 28 Nov 2024 in line with the requirements of the DepEd Philippines . The short story, Isang Mayang Uhaw, by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario and illustrated by Jimmy Torres, was read by the Kiwanis K-Kids Club of Mancup ES President twice that day — done separately for the Grade 3 and 4 student learners. An engagement exercise was done prior to the storytelling session to grab the attention of the students. After the story was read, questions were asked to elicit the student’s observations and a puzzle was prepared to allow them to instantly apply learning. Snacks were distributed to 90 students from Grades 3 and 4 of the school, with the help of School Principal Teresita M. Uson and the class advisers.

The club is also proud of the school’s Grade 3 learners who demonstrated recall of the steps to proper handwashing discussed during the club’s service project. Simple moments like these make us happy as they show that we are indeed improving lives, one child and one community at a time.

*Club Meeting*
The club met on 23 Nov 2024 at Dunkin’, Victoria Place, Calasiao, to discuss updates on club projects and upcoming Kiwanis events, in addition to using an instant messaging tool for information dissemination.

*Working with Other Organizations*
On 20 Nov 2024, the club met and discussed a fundraiser activity with a Calasiao-based mall that will be done in the 1st quarter of 2025. Processing of documents is currently underway.

The club paid a visit to the Pangasinan Agricultural Office and Department of Agriculture - Region 1 Office on 22 Nov 2024 to discuss club projects related to the environment.

The club paid a courtesy visit with Calasiao Municipal Mayor Kevin Roy Q. Macanlalayon 27 Nov 2024. The intent of the club to help the municipality in areas where it is needed most was made clear, and club plans and focus areas were introduced. The meeting was quite productive and educational as the Mayor provided specific guidance for planned club projects, shared his aspirations for the municipality, and openly discussed his concerns on the literacy rate in the municipality. His office also endorsed the club to the Municipal Health Office for an upcoming project, and the Office of the Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator for coordination purposes.

On the same day, the club met with Barangay Officials of Brgy. San Miguel, Calasiao, to discuss the details of an upcoming project.

Exciting things are coming, so stay tuned to our club’s page for updates.

The Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja stormed its way into the first month of the (B2B) administrative year.

*Division Turnover Ceremony and Council Meeting*
Five club members witnessed the turnover from IPLG **g Tapia to (B2B) LG Mitung E Espino on Oct 5 in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, attended by IPDG Glenda Hufano and DGE Stachys Neil Espino. The club received an award from LG B**g for its participation in the Division activities during his term. The club is thankful for IPLG B**g's guidance and endless patience while leading the Division.

The club also participated in the first council meeting of the Division where LG Norma discussed the Division Action Plan. She gave sweet rewards to clubs that conducted club assessment and submitted action plans, which includes the Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja. She emphasized the importance of assessing one's intent in doing Kiwanis work -- that it is in service of the children.

*Club Meetings*
Work and life priorities didn't hinder the club in holding its first club meeting on Oct 11. Videoconferencing tools were used to discuss the club’s first quarter service projects.

The club held another virtual meeting on Oct 30 to discuss the financial direction of the club.

*Global Handwashing Day*
The club promoted handwashing with soap and water at the DepEd Tayo Mancup ES, Calasiao, Pangasinan, on Oct 16 and rallied for other clubs to do the same. Details of this activity are separately posted in the club feed.

*Interclubbing Activities*
The club holds dear the relationships it built with other Kiwanis clubs. Members attended turnover ceremonies within Division 1A, and on Oct 17, met up with members from 3 other Kiwanis clubs to support private pursuits in Dagupan City.

*Working With Other Organizations*
The club visited Denr-Cenro Central Pangasinan on Oct 18 and PENRO Dagupan on Oct 21 to discuss environmental needs of the province, specifically, for guidance on tree-planting activities.

The club keeps this synergistic energy by working not only with external organizations but clubs within Kiwanis as well. Service project ideas which can be jointly done by multiple clubs in their respective communities are currently underway.

After all, when our clubs are aligned and our projects in sync, more children benefit from our efforts.

Helping Raise Awareness on Breast Cancer

According to a Philippine Statistics Authority report, cancer is ranked as the second leading cause of mortality in 2022, with lung, breast, and liver cancers topping the mortality list, as reported by the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer - Global Cancer Observatory. (WHO, Feb 2024)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and while it's the last day of October, it will not stop us from helping raise awareness on this matter. The Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja is working with other Kiwanis clubs to bring awareness on breast cancer to Filipino students.

STAY TUNED.

Breast cancer is the world's most common cancer and causes the greatest number of cancer-related deaths among women.

Celebrating

The Global Handwashing Day is a worldwide advocacy celebrated on (or around) October 15th of every year and dedicated to promoting handwashing with soap as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

On October 16 (Ph time), the Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja, together with the Kiwanis K-Kids Club of Mancup Elementary School, led 49 students from the Grade 3 class of DepEd Tayo Mancup ES 101437, Calasiao, Pangasinan, in answering the question, "Why Are Clean Hands Still Important?". School Principal Teresita M. Uson, K-Kids Faculty Advisor Josenia V. Tamayo and Grade 3 Faculty Advisers welcomed and assisted the club in the activity.

The club gathered materials from Global Handwashing Day, CDC, and Learnplaytv, translated to Filipino and Pangasinan (the local languages in Calasiao), and presented them with a youthful twist to facilitate the discussion and promotion of handwashing. A bookmark was also prepared containing the steps to handwashing which the kids can improve on creatively.

After the briefing, the kids proceeded in groups to the handwashing station to immediately demonstrate their learning on proper handwashing. The students received soap, towels, and snacks, while the school received liquid hand soap from the Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja for their handwashing station.

We encourage other Kiwanis clubs to support the advocacy as it benefits all ages.

Her words ring true for the Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja, an all-female Kiwanis club in the Philippine Luzon District. For more than 36 years, the club has been helping children in barangays within Central Pangasinan, and expects nothing in return.

The club will keep doing service projects in years to come, with the hope that these create ripples in the community for the benefit of children.

Division 1A celebrates 109 years of Kiwanis through service 🥳

The Kiwanis Club of Princess Urduja teamed up with 10 Kiwanis Clubs based in Pangasinan to celebrate the 109th anniversary of Kiwanis.

The celebration started with a special mass for Kiwanis Week at the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Calasiao, Pangasinan. The group proceeded with a simple wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument of the Municipality which was attended by the Municipal Mayor, Kevin Roy Q. Macanlalay.

Immediately after the ceremony, Division 1A Kiwanians left the municipal plaza in a motorcade, with police presence from the Calasiao Police Station led by PLTCOL James Patrick Calibuso.

The procession headed towards the Mdrrmc Calasiao which served as the venue for one of the Division's service projects for the week.

Seventy-five (75) kids from Calasiao day care centers joined the celebration with their parents and guardians. The morning was filled with storytelling and dancing, and ended with the distribution of love meals, and love bags which contained multivitamins and apples to help keep the kids healthy.

The Kiwanians celebrated the successful activity with a post-event celebration at the Bonuan Beach, Dagupan City.
