Cranial Nerves

The cranial nerves are 12 paired nerves that emerge directly from the brain and relay information between the brain and different parts of the head, neck, and torso. Each nerve pair is assigned a Roman numeral (I-XII) based on its anatomical position from front to back on the underside of the brain. Cranial nerves can be classified as sensory, motor, or both.

Cranial nerves emerge directly from the brain, while spinal nerves emerge from the spinal cord. The only cranial nerve with a direct spinal connection is the accessory nerve (CN XI), which has a cranial portion originating in the brainstem and a spinal portion originating from the upper spinal cord (C1-C6). This spinal component ascends to enter the skull through the foramen magnum before joining the cranial part of the nerve.
