As part of the run up to this year's World Patient Safety Day celebration, delegates from the Patient Safety Committee of Ilocos Sur Medical Center, headed by Dr. Tom-Louie J. Acosta, Medical Specialist and current Chairman of the committee, participated in the 4th Patient Safety Congress last September 12-13, 2024, held at the Crown Plaza Manila Galeria.
The 2 day congress which was spearheaded by the joint efforts of the University of the Philippines' College of Medicine, College of Nursing and College of Pharmacology, showcased prominent speakers from the Philippines, Japan, United States and South Africa, and was attended by 711 participants thru simultaneous onsite and online platforms.
Representing reputable institutions of healthcare, namely The World Health Organization, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, St. Lukes Medical Center, and the UP-Philippine General Hospital to name a few, the said speakers tackled multiple issues that impact patient safety on different fronts.
On top of timely and informative lectures, the congress also utilized workshops, open fora and town hall style "Fireside Chats" that engaged the attendees in an interactive learning experience.
Other delegates from the Patient Safety Committee of Ilocos Sur Medical Center who partook in the said event were Caryl Faye M. Lais (Pharmacist), Eunica Leah B. Acosta (Nurse), Fatima H. Dela Cruz (Head Nurse) and Jemailyn F. Javillo (Nurse Supervisor).
As a testament to the importance of patient safety in the health department's agenda, no less than the Secretary of the Health Department himself, Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, delivered the closing plenary during the said event.
Participating in the Annual Patient Safety Congress was a first for Ilocos Sur Medical Center since opening its doors to patients during the last quarter 2022. And sending delegates to the yearly conference is something that the Patient Safety Committee's leadership sees as a vital step in not only implementing, but probably even more important, maintaining a culture of patient safety as Ilocos Sur Medical Center continues to move forward in serving more patients and establishing itself as an end-referral medical center for the region in the near future.
