✨ A day full of learning, service, and celebration ✨

On June 28, 2025, our Cebu and Manila teams came together for our very first in-person gathering — a perfect way to celebrate ABC’s 3rd anniversary! 💙

We were honored to hold a seminar for house parents and provide free screenings for children with special needs at Hospicio de San Jose. This meaningful experience reminded us of our mission to bring care and support where it’s needed most.

To cap off the day, our team explored Intramuros — a time for bonding, reflection, and building stronger ties across our growing ABC family. 🌿🏰

Here’s to more years of serving, learning, and growing together! 🌟

✨ BAKIT IBA-IBA pa ang evaluations o assessments? ✨

Research shows that executive functioning development in childhood occurs in various contexts and follows a general process across different age ranges.

🧡Executive functioning skills are a set of essential abilities that enable us to think through and complete tasks. These skills include problem-solving, task initiation and completion, and sustained attention. They are crucial for everyday activities such as getting dressed, completing homework, or making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

🩵As children grow, their executive functioning skills develop and become more refined. For young children, this might involve learning to follow simple instructions and manage basic routines. As they reach school age, these skills expand to include more complex tasks like organizing schoolwork, managing time effectively, and adapting to changing schedules. Teenagers further develop these skills to handle more significant responsibilities, such as planning for long-term projects, making independent decisions, and managing social interactions.

🚨Challenges in executive functioning can present differently at various ages. Young children may struggle with following multi-step directions or controlling impulses. School-aged children might find it hard to stay organized, complete assignments on time, or transition smoothly between activities. Teenagers with executive functioning difficulties might face challenges in prioritizing tasks, setting goals, and maintaining focus in the face of distractions.

Do any of those examples sound familiar? Challenges can definitely look like other things, too…it’s all so individualized!

💡In this blog post, we break down the different components of executive functioning and offer a workbook to target specific skills: https://www.theottoolbox.com/what-is-executive-function-in-child-development/

📚 Did you know that Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are still quite rare in the Philippines?

Currently, only four institutions in the entire country offer this specialized program, each with its own rich history and distinctive approach to training future SLPs.

𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮 (𝗨𝗣 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮): UP Manila holds the distinction of being the first university to offer an SLP program in the Philippines, starting way back in 1978. Nestled under the College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP), this program laid the groundwork for SLP education, setting high standards and producing some of the country's finest professionals in the field. Learn more: https://our.upm.edu.ph/node/311

𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 (𝗨𝗦𝗧): Fast forward 31 years to 2009, when UST opened its doors to aspiring SLPs. UST's program brought a fresh wave of enthusiasm and innovation, offering students new opportunities to delve into this critical healthcare field. 𝗖𝗲𝗯𝘂 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀' 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗖𝗗𝗨): Breaking the Luzon monopoly, CDU began its SLP program in 2012. This move was a game-changer, bringing high-quality SLP education to the Visayas region and making it more accessible to students outside Luzon.

𝗗𝗲 𝗟𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 (𝗗𝗟𝗦-𝗛𝗦𝗜): Just two years following CDU, in 2014, DLS-HSI joined the ranks, further expanding the reach of SLP education. This addition provided more options for students eager to join this noble profession. Learn more: https://www.dlshsi.edu.ph/academics/college-rehabilitation-sciences/

While three of these programs are based in Luzon (UP Manila, UST, DLS-HSI), CDU stands alone in Visayas 🌏 Unfortunately, Mindanao still awaits its first SLP program, highlighting a need for further expansion to ensure nationwide access to SLP training and services.

With such a specialized and limited number of programs, it's crucial to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be an SLP. If they didn’t graduate from UP Manila, UST, CDU, or DLS-HSI, they might be a 𝗽𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗱𝗼-𝗦𝗟𝗣 🚨⚠️

You can verify if someone is licensed to practice speech pathology via: https://online.prc.gov.ph/Verification , and if you encounter a pseudo-SLP, report them to pasp.ethics@gmail.com to protect the integrity of the profession and ensure the highest standards of care for those in need.

Stay informed and make sure to consult only qualified professionals to get the best care possible. 🧠💬
