📚 Did you know that Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are still quite rare in the Philippines?
Currently, only four institutions in the entire country offer this specialized program, each with its own rich history and distinctive approach to training future SLPs.
𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮 (𝗨𝗣 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮): UP Manila holds the distinction of being the first university to offer an SLP program in the Philippines, starting way back in 1978. Nestled under the College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP), this program laid the groundwork for SLP education, setting high standards and producing some of the country's finest professionals in the field. 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 (𝗨𝗦𝗧): Fast forward 31 years to 2009, when UST opened its doors to aspiring SLPs. UST's program brought a fresh wave of enthusiasm and innovation, offering students new opportunities to delve into this critical healthcare field. 𝗖𝗲𝗯𝘂 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀' 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗖𝗗𝗨): Breaking the Luzon monopoly, CDU began its SLP program in 2012. This move was a game-changer, bringing high-quality SLP education to the Visayas region and making it more accessible to students outside Luzon.
𝗗𝗲 𝗟𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 (𝗗𝗟𝗦-𝗛𝗦𝗜): Just two years following CDU, in 2014, DLS-HSI joined the ranks, further expanding the reach of SLP education. This addition provided more options for students eager to join this noble profession. Learn more: https://www.dlshsi.edu.ph/academics/college-rehabilitation-sciences/
While three of these programs are based in Luzon (UP Manila, UST, DLS-HSI), CDU stands alone in Visayas 🌏 Unfortunately, Mindanao still awaits its first SLP program, highlighting a need for further expansion to ensure nationwide access to SLP training and services.
With such a specialized and limited number of programs, it's crucial to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be an SLP. If they didn’t graduate from UP Manila, UST, CDU, or DLS-HSI, they might be a 𝗽𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗱𝗼-𝗦𝗟𝗣 🚨⚠️
