"Takd🌕l" artist feature: D**g Ber-Ber

Bernard “D**g Ber-Ber” Restificar (b.1970) is a photographer whose art practice intersects with his many roles as a farmer, educator, collector, and community organiser. He founded Oikos Farm and Orchard in Sibonga, Cebu, and is deeply committed to environmental conservation and promoting native Philippine trees. His photography captures the essence of Filipino life, nature, and tradition and reflects his passion for preserving and celebrating cultural heritage. D**g Ber-Ber’s photographs reframe and take inspiration from practices, beliefs, and customs passed down through generations, and these images act as portals to the past.

In the conception of “Takdol,” he decided to integrate the century-old United States Philippine Islands (USPI) One Peso silver coin (minted between 1907 and 1909) to signify embedding history. Minted during the American occupation, these century-old coins are symbols of sovereignty and industry, and they reflect a complex colonial past and evolving cultural ties. Moreover, in friendship and mutual trust, rare 1899 United States Philippine Islands stamps (Scott #214) from the artist’s collection are bequeathed together with every artwork. By doing so, D**g Ber-Ber sends a message of goodwill in encouraging custodianship in collectively building a brighter future for the people of Sibonga.

"Takd🌝l" feature artist: Roland Mortejo

Roland Mortejo (b.1972) started his passion for drawing and sketching at a young age. However, circumstances had led him to venture into a different field and become an engineer.

Nevertheless, he recently took a leap of faith and decided to continue his exploration of art. Mortejo explores the potential of images and objects by transforming them beyond their expected function and association. Observing nature and working on finding more ways to illustrate the cycle of life and decay, he confronts the rigidity of composition and participates in the experimentation of material, form, and color. As an artist, he is interested in depicting the cycle of collapse, creation, and rebirth to assert that transformation is constant and evolution is inevitable.

In proposing new perspectives in understanding life and everything around it, apart from painting, Mortejo uses distressed wood, fractured glass, and repurposed relics that construct and disrupt perceptions while recognizing order and chaos.

"Takd🌝l" artist feature: Jojo Sagayno

The artistic beginnings of Lucilo “Jojo” Sagayno (b.1969) can be traced to the neighbourhood surrounding his childhood home in the district of Labangon in Cebu City, where the impressionist and well-respected painter Virgilio Daclan worked in his open studio, allowing the community to witness his painting process. This experience later led to Sagayno’s interest in the arts and his enrollment at the University of the Philippines, Cebu, where he graduated in 1993. There, he was introduced to the study of colour as discussed by the sculptor and conceptual artist Raymund Fernandez in his class. After receiving his degree, he continued exploring the potential of different materials and mediums while keeping the tradition of abstraction in his compositions. His body of work often surveys shapes and forms as he links organic references with interpretations of scenes and ideas drawn from his desire to engage with societal themes.

Sagayno was cited as one of the regional winners in the 2010 Philippine Art Awards for his work “Twisted”, a monumental assemblage made mainly of sandpaper and metal. In 2007, he received an Excellence Award from the ASEAN Youth Artwork and Creativity Contest in Nanning, China. From 2002 to 2004, he was the representative of the Visayas in the National Committee on Visual Arts under the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). He was also part of the organizing committee of the 2008 Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference (VIVA ExCon).

Sagayno currently teaches at the Fine Arts Department of the University of San Carlos, where he continues to guide and inspire the next generation of Visayan artists.
