Yesterday, ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿด, ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฑ, held within the CTU-Gymnasium, the Association of Psychology Students, joined by the steadfast presence of the Cebutech Peer Facilitators Guild, opened the Su***de Prevention Month Seminar-Workshop with intention and care. Together, we held space for dialogue, healing, and hope.

I like to think that I'm in control but I'm actually not. Maybe you aren't either. That's why we pretend: about our academic standing, the hobbies we find pleasing, our jobs, our ideal group of friends, and everything else that would feel messy if we admitted we don't have it figured out.

Pretending seems like the easiest way to appear normal, yet also feels like bars of soap we grip too hard in our hands, it would rather break than simply slip. But maybe I am too presumptuous, too self-absorbed, to believe that everyone pretends so l much like I do. Maybe not everyone feigns idiocy like a passing summer shower. Maybe not everyone pretends just to silence the anxious thoughts of not being "human enough", of feeling estranged from her own skin, of searching desperately for a place to belong. Maybe not everyone has to pretend they are good at something, when their life has been spent compensating for what they lacked rather than living out what they do best.

So do spare me, the child in me, who only knew how to painstakingly "outdo" others and live beyond her own achievements. Pardon me for I have been programmed to think that if others can, then so must I. Forgive me for I have always been Anxiety.

I have always been the one to overthink, to try harder, and to put things under my control. I think ahead of myself, and imagine beyond what could happen. I hold my breath in situations that threaten the fragile image I tried so hard to maintain.

Iโ€™m sorry because I have always been Anxiety. I allow myself to fill up my mental space until murmurs become screams because it just feels safer that way. It feels safer to never let my guard down, nor think fondly and simply of life.

But here's the truth: I donโ€™t want to be Anxiety. I donโ€™t want to be the anti-heroine of my own life I carefully curated. I want to be a simple young adult enjoying every second because thatโ€™s how it should be. I don't want to be built as Anxiety, controlled by itโ€” I want to be someone who regulates it.

Every 10th day of September, the world unites to mark a day that is brought with hope, light, and compassion โ€” a core part of World Su***de Prevention Month. This global acknowledgment is a proof that su***de is not just an individual issue, but a worldwide concern.

Sadly, more than 720, 000 people take their own lives every year. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), su***de is the third leading cause of death among 15โ€“29 year olds. The reasons are multi-faceted, influenced by social, cultural, biological, psychological, and environmental factors present across the life course.

The World Su***de Prevention Day is not just a time to raise awareness about the issue, but also a moment to remind us that our mental health matters โ€” that every one of us matters. A call for us to spread kindness and empathy, because we never know what struggles someone might be facing. Not all battles are loud and furious; sometimes they are fought in silence and isolation. They can be hidden behind a cheerful classmateโ€™s smile, a talkative friendโ€™s energy, or an instructorโ€™s composed demeanor despite stress.

We canโ€™t simply ask someone whoโ€™s drowning to reach out and expect them to save themselves. Instead, we have to prevent them from reaching a point where they feel like drowning is their only option. May we be the reason why someone believes in hope โ€” not just today, but every day. And most of all, may we never forget that we are worthy of love and care too. Asking for help is never a sign of weakness.
