The center responds to the psychological needs of its clientele by providing competent, adequate, and affordable services, while fully adhering to the ethical tenets of the helping profession. As a unit of the community extension services of the university, it is a medium upon which the SVD mission is realized in the field of mental health.

Disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, or accidents can be unexpected and overwhelming. Such events can take on a psychological toll. An awareness and understanding of our reactions to these events is an important first step in coping and coming to terms with tragic events.

SOME COMMON REACTIONS:
-Strong feelings of anxiety, grief, and sadness
-Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
-Disrupted sleep and eating
-Sensitivity to loud sounds
-Irritability and increased conflict with others
-Headaches, nausea, and chest pain, and other physical symptoms

HOW CAN WE COPE?
-Be aware of your feelings and give them a name.
- Allow yourself to mourn and adjust. It might take a while but giving yourself space is a good first step.
- Seek social support. Whether it’s with friends, family, or fellow victims, this can help feeling connected while you recover.
- Establish routines. Regular meals, sleep, and even exercise can help you regain a sense of control over the situation.
- Identify problematic situations and use problem solving strategies to try to resolve them effectively.

Even as these reactions may be common and to be expected, consider seeking professional help if you find these feelings persistent or intense.
