VMH-NSD Commemorates 2025 International Nurses Week

May 08, 2025—The VisayasMed Hospital's Nursing Service Department commemorated International Nurses Week with a simple yet memorable one-day event.

The day started with a short program honoring the hospital's nurses and nursing personnel. In the morning, NSD personnel gathered at the VMH White Tent, where the Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Ren Dumaraos, opened the event.

One of the program's highlights was a video tribute to the nursing personnel, with doctors and support staff sending their message of gratitude and support. A significant part of the program in the ANAHAW Awards for the employee of the month, awardees for the first quarter of the year, were presented with the recognition, and the awards were given by Mr. Ren Dumaraos, COO, Ms. Ethel Maylon, HR Manager, and Mr. Niko Cantor, Nursing Director.

The ANAHAW Awards Program of the VMH-NSD is the institution's recognition body for outstanding performance and dedicated service of the Nursing Service personnel.

In the afternoon, the commemoration continued with a lecture series by the NSD Education and Research Committee. Nurses attended a lecture on the Basics of ECG, part of the department's Training and Development program.

The NSD is very grateful for the continued support of the hospital's management, led by our COO, Mr. Ren Dumaraosn. Also, and most importantly, we are very thankful for the dedication to service and patient care of all the Nurses, Midwives, Nursing Aides, Technicians, Orderlies, and NSD Clerks/Secretaries.

International Nurses Week is celebrated annually worldwide. The International Nursing Council leads the celebrations, which recognize and appreciate nurses' vital contributions and honor the legacy of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing practice. The celebration concludes on May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday.

NSD Happenings

VisayasMed Hospital updated two facilities to improve its service for its stakeholders.

Two nursing stations under the Nursing Service Department were renovated to provide a more relaxed, conducive, and, most importantly, safe place for our nurses and doctors to work.

On April 30, 2025, Annex C1, which primarily caters to medical-surgical cases patients, was blessed after its renovation. At an earlier date, on February 04, 2025, Annex C2, which also caters to medical-surgical cases, was also blessed following its renovation.

In two months, VisayasMed Hospital improved two nursing facilities, showing its commitment to caring for its employees and providing better service for its clients.

LACTATION MANAGEMENT TRAINING

The VisayasMed Hospital Nursing Service Department, in collaboration with the Brokenshire Medical Center Lactation Committee, successfully conducted the 20-hour Lactation Management Education Training (LMET) that concluded last March 07, 2025, participated by Nurses, Doctors, and Midwives.

The LMET is the start of a collaborative effort from the Nursing, Pediatric, and Obstetrics-Gynecology Departments toward a mother-baby-friendly hospital; this initiative promotes the benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby.

The Borknehsire team, through Dr. Jeannette Nacilla-Sulit, a pediatrician, breast-feeding advocate, and Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, shared their knowledge and experiences on breastfeeding programs and advocacy. Their instructions and knowledge on breastfeeding provided a good foundation for the VisayasMed team's understanding of breastfeeding management.

Part of the BMC Team is Nurse Lyneth Macaraeg, nursing supervisor, and lactation coordinator, and Nurse Shannen Pantinople, head nurse of the Obstetrics & Gynecology Nursing Unit; both are DOH-trained LMET Trainers.

VisayaMed Hospital and Brokenshire Medical Center are both subsidary hospitals of the AppleOne Medical Group that operates in Visayas and Mindanao.

"HIRAYA MANAWARI" FOR A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

The VisayasMed Hospital - Nursing Service Department once again successfully concluded this year's NSD Week Celebration with the much-awaited gala night.

Last October 29, 2024, the NSD was able to exemplify once again the value of the hard work of the nursing service personnel and celebrated their success for another time through the annual celebration.

Our hard-working and dedicated healthcare worker set aside their scrub suites for a night and donned their enigmatic modern filipiniana ensembles.

The night was fun and memorable as laughter and cheers filled the CENDET Auditorium. The camaraderie and connectedness of the nursing service personnel, namely the nurses, midwives, aides, orderlies, technicians, clerks, secretaries, and fleet personnel, exchanged admiration and friendship.

The versatility of the nursing management team carried on the night ensured that their subordinates would experience the best event they would have.

The Nursing Director, Mr. Niko Cantor, welcomed everyone to the event by launching the new NSD Vision, Mission, and Values, followed by introducing the department's three pillars thrust for development and sustainability for the next five years. Mr. Ren Domaraos, the hospital's chief operating officer, shared a toast of affirmation for all healthcare workers of the Nursing Department. Mr. Ronnie Santos, the senior vice president of the AppleOne Medical Group, the management team of the VisyasMed Hospital, and the representative of affiliate nursing schools from ACT and USC were also present at the event.

Indeed, it was a memorable night; the event shows VisayasMed Hospital's commitment to providing a healthy working and appreciative environment for all its employees.

The NSD thanks and appreciates this year's NSD Week Working Committee with their lead, Nurse Kim Jarina. The entire NSD looks forward to next year's gala night edition.

VISMED- NSD HOSTED INAUGURAL ANAHAW AWARDS

On the Night of October 29, 2024, the CENDET Auditorium was filled with hope and inspiration as the Nursing Service Department of the VisayasMed Hospital Cebu hosted its Inaugural Nursing Service ANAHAW Awards. The term ANAHAW is an acronym for the attributes of a Vismedian Healthcare Worker to wit:

A – Altruistic
N – Nurturing
A – Adaptability
H – Humane
A – Advocate
W – Well Rounded

The ANAHAW Awards marks the beginning of the culture of staff engagement and recognition, and they shall be held annually during the Nursing Service Week celebration of the hospital.

PNA7 GOV OPENS VISAYASMED NSD WEEEK 2024

On October 25, 2024, the VisayasMed Hospital - Nursing Service Department opened this year's celebration of the annual NSD Week. The celebration aligns with the national Nurses Week celebration, a yearly celebration institutionalized by Presidential Proclamation No. 536.

Gracing this year's opening event is a keynote speech by the newly elected Philippine Nurses Association- Cebu Chapter Governor, Dr. Marc Ryan Portuguez, RN. He spoke of the year's national celebration theme, "Our Nurses, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care." This theme is an adoption of the International Nurses Week Celebration in May.

The Nursing Management Theme and the entire nursing service personnel participated in the event. Also present during the event are some of the Management Team members of the VisayasMed Hospital, namely Dr. Ron del Mar - Medical Director, and Ms. Ethel Ghee Maylon - HRD Manager.

It is remembered that the hospital NSD Week Celebration began its conception in 2023 and celebrated its 1st NSD Week; this is materialized through the initiative of the Nursing Service Management Team in their desire to celebrate the milestone of the nursing service department and express their appreciation to the hardworking Nurses, Midwives, Nursing Aides, Transport Orderlies, Technicians, Clerks, and Secretaries of the NSD.

2nd NSD WEEK CELEBRATION
October 25-29, 2024

The ViyasMed Hospital once again conducted the annual Nursing Service Week Celebration, which is in unity with the National Nursing Week Celebration held annually in the last week of October.

This year’s event started with the opening program on the 25th of October, graced by the newly elected Region 7 PNA Governor, Mr. Marc Ryan Portuguez. Wellness was in mind during the Zumba Dance event at the VisayasMed City Center – the Medical Arts Building lobby on the 26th of October.

The week-long activity is packed as the Nursing Service personnel exhibit prowess during the 2nd annual Nursing Service Quiz Bowl Competition and their artistry in the Digital Logo Design Contest.

Lounging and relaxing were in mind as this year’s unique activity included a movie theater at the white tent.

The week’s celebration concluded on the night of the 29th of October as the NSD personnel donned their most enigmatic Filipiniana attire during the 2nd Annual NSD Gala Night. On the Gala Night, they Highlighted the Inaugural Nursing Service ANAHAW Awards.

This year’s NSD Week celebration was full of fun and inspiration, and we look forward to next year’s edition.
