Last meditation session topic;

Wisdom isn’t just helpful—it’s essential for navigating life and making sound decisions.

But did you know there are three distinct levels of wisdom?

Understanding these levels helps us stay grounded and avoid the trap of self-righteousness. Here’s a breakdown:

1. Prajna of Hearing – This is where wisdom begins: by studying scriptures, books, and teachings. It’s the intake of knowledge.
2. Prajna of Contemplation – The next step is reflection. We analyze what we’ve learned, question it, and begin forming our own understanding. It’s deeper than just knowing—it’s thinking.
3. Prajna of Meditation – This is the highest level. It’s not about concepts or thoughts, but direct, lived experience. It transforms how we see and live in the world.

So before offering advice or making judgments, it’s worth pausing to ask: What level of wisdom am I drawing from? Being mindful of this keeps our intentions honest and our insights clear.

See you at the meditation session tonight. 🙂

Last meditation session topic;

If you ever feel unmotivated, lost, or discouraged, what can you do?

In Buddhist practice, there’s a powerful way to regain clarity and direction:
Taking refuge in the Triple Gem.
• The Buddha – for inspiration
• The Dharma – for guidance
• The Sangha – for support

This isn’t just a belief system. It’s a practical, structured approach to facing life’s difficulties with wisdom and resilience.

Last meditation session topic;

Are humans inherently good or instinctively evil?

Imagine placing ordinary people from different backgrounds together in a room. Would they immediately turn on each other?

I believe the answer is no.

At our core, we are inherently good. This goodness stems from our Buddha Nature (buddha svabhava)—a fundamental purity and potential for wisdom that exists in all of us.

It’s only when we’re led astray by ignorance and false beliefs that we act against that nature, resulting in harm and division.

Last meditation session topic;

Does Buddhism Support Nationalist Propaganda?

Many people wonder whether Buddhism supports nationalist propaganda, especially given its occasional presence in political conflicts.

To be clear: as Buddhist practitioners, we honor, protect, and uphold the values and interests of the nations we live in.

If we’re in the Philippines, we support the country’s national interests for the well-being of its people—rejecting any harmful or corrupt agendas. That makes us Filipinos.

If we’re in the United States, we support efforts that uplift its citizens. That makes us Americans.

If we’re in China, we support the nation’s moral and ethical foundations. That makes us Chinese.

This is how we live in harmony—by respecting and contributing to the societies we are part of.

Nationalism, after all, is simply loyalty to a place and a commitment to align your interests with its well-being. Buddhism doesn’t oppose this; it just insists that loyalty be guided by ethics, compassion, and wisdom.

Last night, we took part in the annual worldwide simultaneous sutra calligraphy mindfulness practice.

Sutra transcription is an ancient meditative technique designed to deepen one’s understanding of the Dharma.

Studies show that writing down what you learn and experience helps you retain it more effectively—and benefit from it more deeply.

Last meditation session topic;

During the Buddha’s teaching career, he frequently spoke about the Afflictions (kleshas) — mental disturbances that arise from ignorance.

In simple terms, afflictions are habits or tendencies that operate without awareness.

For example, drinking tea can be a harmless routine. But when it becomes an obsession — when no other concern outweighs the urge to have tea — it turns into an affliction.

The same principle applies to relationships, careers, driving, and nearly every aspect of life.

The Buddha’s remedy? Practice the Eightfold Noble Path.

Join us for tonight’s meditation session.

Last week meditation session topic;

What Is Religion?
What Is the Purpose of Religion?

Before answering those questions, let’s first define what we mean by “religion.”

Religion is typically understood as an organized system of beliefs and worship centered around one or more supreme beings.

By that definition, Buddhism often isn’t considered a religion in the conventional sense, because it doesn’t involve worshiping a deity. However, we have no issue with any belief system—as long as it aims to improve people’s lives and contribute to the greater good.

How Does Buddhism Differ from Other Religions?

Most religions involve worshiping a supreme being for guidance, blessings, and well-being. In contrast, Buddhism doesn’t depend on a higher power to bring us happiness. Instead, we rely on ourselves. Through consistent practice and effort, we cultivate wisdom, compassion, and inner peace. Any external blessings are welcomed—but not expected.

Because of this mindset, many Buddhist practitioners approach life with optimism. We don’t rely solely on outside forces; we trust in our own path.

So, What Is the Purpose of Religion?

As a wise dog below put it: “It’s to push our limits and improve our wisdom.”

See you tonight at the meditation session!
