*MPOX DETECTED IN DAVAO STILL CLADE II; SEVERE IMMUNOCOMPROMISED STATE - NOT MPOX - LIKELY CAUSE OF DEATH OF ONE CASE*
DOH Advisory | 18 April 2025
The Department of Health (DOH) assures the public that the cases of Mpox reported by the Davao City Health Office (Davao CHO) are of the same Clade II variant of MPX virus. The level of risk remains the same as in previous months; there is no increased danger.
The patient who passed away did not succumb to Mpox itself; said patient was in a severely immunocompromised state and is likely to have died of non-Mpox complications.
As mentioned by Davao CHO, established Mpox response measures are working. Surveillance systems detected the cases which led to their careful isolation from the public. All identified close contacts are being monitored.
We can continue with our meaningful reflection this Good Friday and Easter weekend. Those not observing may likewise rest and recover during this public holiday.
Common symptoms of mpox are a skin rash or mucosal lesions, which can last 2–4 weeks. The rashes are accompanied by fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes. Anyone can get mpox. Mpox can be transmitted to humans through close, intimate (including sexual) contact with someone who is infectious, with contaminated materials like used clothes or utensils, or with infected animals. Soap and water can kill the virus. When washing contaminated materials, use gloves.
Mpox is treated with supportive care. Patients with no other illnesses may stay at home after testing, until all scabs fall off and a new layer of skin forms, typically after 2-4 weeks.
