Here's how to make the most out of your first teleconsultation:

1. List all symptoms you’ve been experiencing if you feel you might forget. No detail is too small to note.
2. Keep on hand any medical or mental health records that you believe are relevant. This gives your psychiatrist a good opportunity for a better assessment.
3. It’s best to advise your mental health professional on any existing medications you have including dosage, timing, and how long you’ve been taking them.
4. Initial consultations are centered on gathering information. There will be a lot of questions. You can ask a trusted friend or family member to join if you feel they have a unique perspective or if they make you feel safer.
5. First sessions are longer than usual. This allows the psychiatrist to listen to your entire story.
6. The psychiatrist may order tests to have a more objective look at what’s going on.

It could take a few more consultations to reach a diagnosis. You and your psychiatrist will work together on creating a treatment plan that will suit your health needs, personal preferences, family situation, and age.
