Women have solidified their place in history, dominating sciences, arts, and politics. Yet after their decades-long fight for equality and freedom, it only requires a political, economic, or religious crisis for womenโs fundamental rights to be called into question. As we commemorate the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women, we must recognize the inherent fragility in these freedoms and ensure the basic human rights of all women are treated as absolute and binding.
Women today remain deprived of basic human rights and fundamental freedoms. We see this deprivation manifest in countless ways: from the systematic prohibition of womenโs access to higher education in Afghanistan; to the widespread use of sexual violence and enslavement against women and girls in conflict zones like the Democratic Republic of Congo; and the denial of bodily autonomy and access to comprehensive healthcare in nations like the Philippines.
In totality, nearly 736 million women in the world experienced physical or sexual violence, with 140 women being killed every day on average. This systemic violence extends down to cyber-harassment, where women are constantly targeted and silenced, with no more than 40% of the worldโs nations having laws protecting them.
Their contributions will forever be etched in history. Yet the same cannot be said for their liberty. Women are still fighting the long battle for rights often handed to their male counterparts on a silver platter.
The form of violence may change, but its intention to control and suppress never does. On this day, we must commit not just to remembrance but to action. The UP Peninsulares stand firmly against all forms of violence and oppression. We aim to uphold the rights, dignity, and safety of every woman and commit to promoting equality while also amplifying silenced voices, fostering a society where women can thrive away from fear and harm.
