πŸ¦‹ The Better Alternative πŸ¦‹
β€” A symposium on Smoking, HIV, Mental Health, and other issues that plague our youth today.

------------

Adolescence is a crucial time when young people are prone to adopting unhealthy behaviors.

Did you know 90% of all smokers first tried smoking by age 18? Or 50% of all drug users in the PH began experimenting with drugs when they were 15-19yo? Or that 62% of new HIV cases were among young people, some less than 10yo? Or that 16.8% of Filo students 13-17yo attempted su***de? These statistics are only getting worse. 😩

Behavioral problems (i.e. addiction, risky behaviors) are unique because there is no "wonder pill" one can take to magically make you stop engaging in these harmful activities . Dili sya murag high blood na mutake lang kag Losartan, muubos na dayun imong BP. These conditions need a reframing of the mind. It takes a strong personal decision not to start it, and if you already have, to stop.

Since working in public health means the focus should be heavier on the PREVENTION rather than treatment, addressing these issues, especially with a youth audience, needs more than a purely medical approachβ€” this needs a psycho-social-spiritual approach.

While studying for the topic, I came across a TED-Ed lecture about adolescent psychology and they said that we should not look down on the power of AWARENESS. So we decided to have this symposium to let the youth know that they have 2 choices: first is to continue with these risky behaviors and reap its consequences, or choose its much better alternativeβ€”which is living a life of purpose and direction.

------

During the morning session, I discussed about the peculiarities of the teenage brain and how this makes them more susceptible to risky behaviors. 🧠 In the afternoon session, we invited guest speakers from Redeemer Lutheran Church to talk about finding our purpose in Christ and how He can satisfy the human's deep longing for joy and identity. ✝️

Grabe ka enjoy ang tibuok adlaw. We had a lot of small group discussions, team games, ice breaker songs, and snacks πŸ˜‚. Every one was so participative, and maka amaze ang wisdom and perspective sa mga students even at their young age.

I would say that the future of Concepcion will be very bright if we continue to look out for our youth today.

-------
Thank you so much to LGU Concepcion, Sir Mejares the school head of Concepcion NHS, and our guests from Redeemer Lutheran Church for your unwavering support for this activity.πŸ™

Thank you to all the Grade 11 and 12 students who attended. I learned so much from you and I hope daghan pud mo ug na learn from this symposium. ☺️

Thank you RHU team for working very hard, and even overtime, to make this event successful. 🫢🏼

This activity will forever be etched in my heart as a public health Doctor, as someone who has very high hopes for the youth, and as someone whose life was changed and is still being changed by Christ. πŸ¦‹πŸ’—πŸŒˆ

It's been a long time since i last posted on this account so let me start off by expressing my happiness with the turnout of this event. πŸ€°πŸ’–πŸ‘‘πŸŒΈπŸ¦‹

Buntis Congress 2024 is an event where we gather all the pregnant ladies in the municipality and do lots of fun activities. We had short lectures and pop quizzes (with prizes of course πŸ˜‰), had FREE ultrasound (one 1st time mom even have twins!), FREE CBC and Blood typing, FREE dental check-up, gave out lots of gifts, and held a mini beauty pageant! πŸ‘‘ They looked so beautiful in their cute dresses, styled hair, and light makeups. It was so refreshing to see. All the moms were sooo attentive and participative too, some even took notes of the lectures! But honestly the best part was seeing them all go home with wide smiles on their faces. To our pregnant moms, I hope we made your day! πŸ’—

Now personally, I really wanted to pour all efforts on this event bc we had been facing issues of high incidence of home births and neonatal deaths. We were hoping that this event would help spread our strong advocacy on proper maternal and child care. During the Healthy Buntis Pageant, hearing their answers to the difficult questions we threw made me so proud. They answered with such conviction and substance. It was truly inspiring. Our purpose has been met.

Our Buntis Congress may not be like the other municaplities with huge led screens and nice stage lights. But with our meager budget, I think we nailed it. πŸ˜‰πŸ’ͺ

Now this event wouldnt even be successful if not for my diligent and supportive RHU Team. Each and every one worked so hard to pull off our big plans. I thank everyoneβ€”from our utility to our driver, to our midwives, to our nurses. Thank you so much as always, guys!

Let me just take this moment to personally express my gratitude to the following people who i cant imagine without during the preparation of this event:

Thank you to our guest doctors Doc Emma and Doc Medina, to our guest med.techs Maam Kristle and Maam Jisellette, to SB Loquias and DMO IV Maam Estela! Your presence truly graced our event. 😊

To maam Sheriz, whose artistic prowess was on full display. DIY ra tawon na tanan among backdrop guys, dili halata noh? Each one of the balloons were put together by maam sheriz and made it into this beautiful stage design. 🎨

To Paula girl, na very active and proactive as always. Thank you so much girl for gladly filling in the role of an emcee and covering for my lapses in program preparation. Love love! 🎀

To Aiza girl, for overseeing things and also covering for me sa mga kulang na preparations and on-the-spot decisions. Truly a born leader. πŸ’»

To Maam Mary Ann and Kuya Boni, for the plywood arch na very ka nindot! Thankyou! πŸͺ΅

And lastly, but definitely not the least, to mamshies Maam Teresita Lumantas and Maam Lescil (and her better half Kuya Neil), thank you for always preparing grabe ka lami na mga pagkaon! Im always mindblown sa inyong skills sa pag luto. Not only me, but even our guests are all so impressed. Thank you pud kaayo for working behind the scenes, sa pag dukdok sa mga papeles and pagpalihok sa tanan kinahanglan para ma successful ang event. Literal unsaon nalang gyud kung wla mo. I pray the Lord will bless you a thousand fold! πŸ₯˜πŸ²πŸ°

Salamat Lord for providing us with everything we need and for blessing our event. πŸ’—πŸ™

February 28, 2024

Amidst the gloomy and rainy weather, we went to Brgy. Upper Potongan to visit a patient with diabetic foot. His condition is already so bad all his toes turned to black. The foot is already unsalvageable. The ideal management for this patient is amputation, but the patient so persistently refuses this. Since we respect patient autonomy, all we did was wound dressing, further patient education, and medical management of his diabetes.

After this, we went to Brgy. Capule to visit a patient with Scrofula, a kind of TB in the neck lymph nodes, that got sooo bad it ate up his entire right neck. It was one of the most morbid cases i've seen. He was admitted to the hospital but opted to go home against doctor's advice. Patient autonomy is foremost in the medical field, so all we could do was have the patient take his HRZE meds and clean up his wounds.

This is a sad event for us doctors. We never ever want to see our patients suffer, and we will never ask our patients to do anything that will not benefit them. Please, listen to your doctors.

Also, let this be a reminder to everyone to never wait until the condition worsens before you go see a doctor. Prevention and early detection is key!!!

Mintras sayo pa, mintras gamay pa ang bukol, mintras dili pa lala ang samad, magpa check up na sa pinakaduol na health center aron matagaan dayon ug saktong tambal.
