Attention pet guardians, in alignment with the "Bawat Buhay Mahalaga" initiative by the Department of Health, let's ensure the holistic well-being of our cherished companions, particularly during festive occasions marked by fireworks.

Understanding that pets, like dogs, perceive these events differently, it's necessary to acknowledge the potential distress they experience. The loud and unpredictable noises from fireworks can trigger a heightened fight-or-flight response in dogs, manifesting as anxiety, restlessness, and other signs of discomfort.

To safeguard your pet's mental and physical health during these celebrations, consider the following measures:

1. Keep them Indoors: Bring your dog indoors during fireworks displays, creating a secure environment that mitigates the risk of them running away in fear.

2. Establish a Safe Space:
Utilize a crate if your dog is crate-trained or designate a quiet room with familiar items, such as music or white noise, to provide a comforting atmosphere.

3. Calming Wraps: Explore the use of calming wraps, vests, or shirts, which apply gentle pressure and have been known to alleviate stress in many dogs.

4. Desensitization: Proactively work with your dog before firework-heavy holidays, gradually exposing them to firework sounds while incorporating positive reinforcement, treats, and play.

5. ID Tags: Ensure your petโ€™s ID tags are up to date. This crucial step aids in identifying and contacting you if your pet were to run off in fear.

Remember, your demeanor influences your pet's response. If you remain calm and composed during fireworks, it helps reassure your furry friend.

By adopting these practices, you contribute to a comprehensive and caring approach to your pet's well-being, aligning with the administrationโ€™s and DOHโ€™s principles of .

Together, let's establish an environment where every life, including our pets', is valued and protected.

Davao Cityโ€” Protecting families and keeping communities healthy remained at the center of the Ministry of Healthโ€“Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanaoโ€™s (MOHโ€“BARMM) year-end review and planning activity for infectious disease programs.

As 2025 draws to a close, health workers and program teams under the Infectious Diseases Cluster (IDC) came together to look back on the year, not only to measure accomplishments but to listen, reflect, and learn from experiences on the ground. The activity created a space for honest discussions about what worked, what needs improvement, and how services can better reach people in barangays, schools, and far-flung communities.

Participants shared stories from the field, highlighting the daily efforts of frontline health workers who serve communities during both calm times and emergencies, including disease surveillance, patient care, laboratory services, supply delivery, and outbreak response. These conversations helped identify gaps and challenges that directly affect families, such as delays in detection, access to services, and coordination during outbreaks.

Guided by these shared experiences, MOHโ€“BARMM and its partners worked together to finalize the 2026 Work and Financial Plan for each IDC program. The plan aims to ensure that resources are used wisely, support reaches those who need it most, and health services remain coordinated and responsive, especially during public health threats.

โ€œThis activity is about people, not just programs,โ€ MOHโ€“BARMM emphasized. โ€œEvery plan we improve, and every system we strengthen, helps protect lives and gives our communities greater peace of mind.โ€

By strengthening collaboration and grounding planning in real community needs, MOHโ€“BARMM continues to move toward a more caring, responsive, and resilient infectious disease program, one that safeguards the health and well-being of the Bangsamoro people.

MOH-BARMM Marks Major Nutrition Milestone with Recovery of Cured SAM Child and Opening of First-Ever Nutrition Ward in Upi

Cotabato City - The Ministry of Health of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MOH-BARMM), through its Nutrition Division has achieved a significant milestone in advancing child nutrition and health services in the region with the successful recovery of a severely acute malnourished (SAM) child and the inauguration of the first-ever Nutrition Ward at the Datu Blah T. Sinsuat District Hospital in Upi, Maguindanao del Norte.

The milestone event highlighted the provision of Complementary and Supplementary Food Boxes to Baby Shaila, a previously diagnosed SAM child who has now fully met the discharge criteria and transitioned to Out-Patient Therapeutic Care (OTC). The food assistance aims to sustain her nutritional recovery, prevent relapse, and support proper, age-appropriate feeding practices within her household.

Baby Shaila was identified as requiring urgent nutritional intervention after health authorities noted indicators of severe malnutrition, prompting immediate coordination among concerned agencies. She was subsequently referred to the MOH-BARMM Nutrition Division, which confirmed her condition and immediately facilitated her admission to the In-Patient Therapeutic Care (ITC) unit of Datu Blah T. Sinsuat District Hospital under the leadership of Nutrition Division Chief Ms. Celia C. Sagaral, RND, MPH.

Admitted on October 21, 2025, Baby Shaila weighed only 5.2 kilograms and had a Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) of 9.7 centimeters, both of which were clear indicators of severe acute malnutrition (SAM). Through intensive therapeutic feeding, medical management, and close monitoring by a multidisciplinary team of doctors and nutrition professionals, including Nutritionist Michael Enerlan, RND; Dr. Tisha Margaret A. Casteel, MD, DPB, Medical Officer IV; Dr. Almadin G. Dimaukom, MD, Chief of Medical Professional Staff I; Dr. Julieta Siapno, MD, FDPS, Pediatric Consultant; and Dr. Richie Diane Godoy, MD, under the leadership of Medical Center Chief I, Dr. Edwin John Limjuco, MD, MHCA, FPCHA, FPSMSG, she steadily recovered and reached 6.4 kilograms with a MUAC of 12.7 centimeters, surpassing her target recovery measurements.

To ensure holistic and sustained care, the MOH-BARMM Nutrition Division, together with partner agencies including the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Affairs (MIPA), conducted a joint visit and ceremonial send-off for Baby Shaila and her mother. In addition to nutrition counseling and home-based care guidance, the mother has also undergone an appropriate mental health assessment and treatment, recognizing the vital role of caregiver well-being in ensuring optimal child health outcomes. Under the directive of Health Minister Sinolinding, weekly monitoring for December 2025 and continued follow-up throughout 2026 were ordered to safeguard the childโ€™s long-term health and nutrition.

Coinciding with Baby Shailaโ€™s discharge was the inauguration of the first-ever Nutrition Ward in BARMM, located within Datu Blah T. Sinsuat District Hospital. The facility is equipped with three dedicated patient rooms and a fully functional preparation area, including essential amenities such as a refrigerator, water dispenser, food preparation counters, and storage for therapeutic supplies. Explicitly designed for nutritional rehabilitation, the Nutrition Ward provides a permanent and specialized space for the assessment, treatment, monitoring, and counseling of malnourished and nutritionally at-risk individuals. This landmark development underscores MOH-BARMMโ€™s strengthened commitment to combating malnutrition, improving hospital-based nutrition services, and ensuring that no Bangsamoro child is left behind. The successful recovery of Baby Shaila and the establishment of the Nutrition Ward stand as tangible proof of what coordinated action, compassionate care, and sustained investment in nutrition can achieve for the people of BARMM.

The Dangerous Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Program under the Mental Health Unit of the Ministry of Health-BARMM, organized a five-day Training on Katatagan, Kalusugan at Damayan (KKDK) and General Intervention on Health and Well-Being Awareness (GINHAWA) on November 3-7, 2025, and December 1-5, 2025, at Alnor Hotel, Cotabato City. To strengthen the capacity of participants in promoting mental health, resilience, and overall well-being within their communities. Under the direction of Dr. Norman Prince D. Datumanong, DPCAM, head of the Mental Health Unit; Mr. Alijubran U. Lauban, RN, MPA, Dangerous Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Program Coordinator; and the DDAPTP team.

The activity was conducted to strengthen the communityโ€™s understanding and involvement in promoting a drug-free and healthy environment. The training emphasized the importance of mental resilience, physical health, and community support as key components in preventing substance abuse and fostering overall well-being.

The training was attended by Public Health Nurses, reflecting the Ministryโ€™s continuous commitment to advancing holistic health and wellness across the Bangsamoro region. In his welcome message, Dr. Norman Prince Datumanong, Head of the Mental Health Unit, highlighted the importance of gaining knowledge and understanding the concepts of how individual wellness contributes to collective community strength, especially in addressing issues related to drug use and rehabilitation.

One of the most meaningful aspects of the training was the safe and compassionate space created for RHU participants to share their personal stories and professional challenges. Many expressed how the sessions validated their experiences as frontline workers and reminded them of the importance of tending to their own mental health. Others highlighted that the training offered new perspectives on how they can extend psychosocial support not only to patients but also to colleagues and community partners.

By the end of the program, RHU personnel left the training with renewed motivation and enhanced confidence. Equipped with the principles of GINHAWA and KKDK, they are now better prepared to integrate mental health awareness, stress management strategies, and community resilience-building into their daily work. More importantly, the training reaffirmed that wellness, both personal and communal, is a shared responsibility and that RHUs remain vital pillars in promoting a healthier, stronger, and more compassionate community.
