MOH-BARMM Marks Major Nutrition Milestone with Recovery of Cured SAM Child and Opening of First-Ever Nutrition Ward in Upi
Cotabato City - The Ministry of Health of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MOH-BARMM), through its Nutrition Division has achieved a significant milestone in advancing child nutrition and health services in the region with the successful recovery of a severely acute malnourished (SAM) child and the inauguration of the first-ever Nutrition Ward at the Datu Blah T. Sinsuat District Hospital in Upi, Maguindanao del Norte.
The milestone event highlighted the provision of Complementary and Supplementary Food Boxes to Baby Shaila, a previously diagnosed SAM child who has now fully met the discharge criteria and transitioned to Out-Patient Therapeutic Care (OTC). The food assistance aims to sustain her nutritional recovery, prevent relapse, and support proper, age-appropriate feeding practices within her household.
Baby Shaila was identified as requiring urgent nutritional intervention after health authorities noted indicators of severe malnutrition, prompting immediate coordination among concerned agencies. She was subsequently referred to the MOH-BARMM Nutrition Division, which confirmed her condition and immediately facilitated her admission to the In-Patient Therapeutic Care (ITC) unit of Datu Blah T. Sinsuat District Hospital under the leadership of Nutrition Division Chief Ms. Celia C. Sagaral, RND, MPH.
Admitted on October 21, 2025, Baby Shaila weighed only 5.2 kilograms and had a Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) of 9.7 centimeters, both of which were clear indicators of severe acute malnutrition (SAM). Through intensive therapeutic feeding, medical management, and close monitoring by a multidisciplinary team of doctors and nutrition professionals, including Nutritionist Michael Enerlan, RND; Dr. Tisha Margaret A. Casteel, MD, DPB, Medical Officer IV; Dr. Almadin G. Dimaukom, MD, Chief of Medical Professional Staff I; Dr. Julieta Siapno, MD, FDPS, Pediatric Consultant; and Dr. Richie Diane Godoy, MD, under the leadership of Medical Center Chief I, Dr. Edwin John Limjuco, MD, MHCA, FPCHA, FPSMSG, she steadily recovered and reached 6.4 kilograms with a MUAC of 12.7 centimeters, surpassing her target recovery measurements.
To ensure holistic and sustained care, the MOH-BARMM Nutrition Division, together with partner agencies including the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoplesโ Affairs (MIPA), conducted a joint visit and ceremonial send-off for Baby Shaila and her mother. In addition to nutrition counseling and home-based care guidance, the mother has also undergone an appropriate mental health assessment and treatment, recognizing the vital role of caregiver well-being in ensuring optimal child health outcomes. Under the directive of Health Minister Sinolinding, weekly monitoring for December 2025 and continued follow-up throughout 2026 were ordered to safeguard the childโs long-term health and nutrition.
Coinciding with Baby Shailaโs discharge was the inauguration of the first-ever Nutrition Ward in BARMM, located within Datu Blah T. Sinsuat District Hospital. The facility is equipped with three dedicated patient rooms and a fully functional preparation area, including essential amenities such as a refrigerator, water dispenser, food preparation counters, and storage for therapeutic supplies. Explicitly designed for nutritional rehabilitation, the Nutrition Ward provides a permanent and specialized space for the assessment, treatment, monitoring, and counseling of malnourished and nutritionally at-risk individuals. This landmark development underscores MOH-BARMMโs strengthened commitment to combating malnutrition, improving hospital-based nutrition services, and ensuring that no Bangsamoro child is left behind. The successful recovery of Baby Shaila and the establishment of the Nutrition Ward stand as tangible proof of what coordinated action, compassionate care, and sustained investment in nutrition can achieve for the people of BARMM.
