•Antiviral medications: A doctor may prescribe antiviral drugs for those at high risk of complications. These work best when taken within 48 hours of symptoms starting.
•Antibiotics: These are not effective against the flu virus itself, which is a viral infection. They may be prescribed only if a bacterial complication develops.
