R1MC urges safe celebrations, launches “Oplan Iwas Paputok"

DAGUPAN CITY— The Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) urged the public to practice safe and responsible holiday celebrations as it launched “Oplan Iwas Paputok” during a Talakayan forum with the R1MC Press Corps on December 26 at the hospital’s FQD Hall.

Medical Center Chief II Dr. Joseph Roland O. Mejia called for cooperation with the Department of Health’s Oplan Iwas-Paputok to help ensure public safety. “R1MC is ready to accommodate any holiday-related medical emergencies. We urge the public to enjoy safely as prevention is better than cure,” he said, assuring the public of the hospital’s preparedness and heightened readiness throughout the holiday season.

As of press time, Dr. Dino Lorenz Manzano, Oplan Iwas-Paputok physician-in-charge reported nine cases of firework-related injuries, highlighting the hospital’s vigilance in managing emergencies.

Dr. Mejia was joined by Hospital Spokesperson Dr. Jocelyn De Guzman, Chief Nurse Maria Paz Santos, Emergency Medicine Head Dr. Joseph Fama, Oplan Iwas-Paputok physician-in-charge Dr. Manzano, and R1MC Press Corps Adviser Ramon Bautista, all emphasizing a unified, multi-disciplinary commitment to community safety during the holidays.

The forum also highlighted the culmination of R1MC’s centennial celebration.
Centennial committee chairperson Ms. Maria Paz Santos shared highlights of the year-long activities, commemorating 100 years of service and the hospital’s contributions to health care in the Ilocos region.

Adding to the milestone, R1MC also launched its centennial coffee table book which documents key achievements under the current administration. The event concluded with a book-signing activity attended by hospital officials and members of the media.

GAD Corner

On December 22 and 23, the Region 1 Medical Center’s GAD HCWP and the Brain Attack Team through The Stroke Prevention and Awareness Program extended care beyond hospital walls through our Home Outreach Program for former stroke patients. This initiative brings medical consultation, health education, essential grocery and medication support, and emotional and spiritual encouragement directly to our patients’ homes—because recovery does not end at discharge.

Through teamwork, compassion, and service, we continue our commitment to holistic, patient-centered care and community health.

The recipients are the Post Stroke Patients of the Acute Stroke Unit, who are residents of Dagupan City and Municipality of Mangaldan. Thank you to our dedicated healthcare workers, partners, and supporters who made this meaningful outreach possible.

As we celebrate this Christmas season, may this outreach be a reminder that the true spirit of Christmas is found in service, compassion, and caring for one another—especially those most in need.

đŸ“·The spirit of Christmas, even at the hospital.🎄🎁

On December 23, 2025, the halls of the R1MC Cancer Center felt a little warmer as Mc Carol Foods Inc., McDonald’s, and UP Delta Lambda Sigma shared 200 food packs with patients, their families, and hospital staff.

In a place marked by long waits and quiet strength, the simple act of giving brought smiles, comfort, and a reminder that the season of hope reaches everyone who serves and heals.

From caring hands to healing hearts, we’re wishing everyone a merry, bright, and healthy Christmas! ✹🎄

GAD Corner- Region 1 Medical Center - Emergency Medicine Department & Health Emergency Management System in collaboration with GAD- Violence Injury Prevention Program for the celebration of Firecracker Injury Prevention Month and National Health Emergency Preparedness Day. GAD-VIPP conducted a social outreach and advocacy lecture, APIR: Aksyon Paputok Injury Reduction, to students and faculty of Divine Word Academy of Dagupan last December 03, 2025.

This year‘s program advocacy to promote better public education on firecracker-related injury reduction was executed through spreading awareness and information on firecracker injury reduction beyond R1MC‘s hospital grounds to educate the younger generation as a strategy to ultimately decrease and prevent these injuries. The activity mainly involved junior and senior highschool students of Divine Word Academy of Dagupan and engaged them in an interactive exchange of inquiries and ideas about firecracker injury reduction as well as the DO's in cases of injury and where to refer were discussed.
