As the holiday season reaches its peak, with only a few days left before Christmas, the Department of Science and Technology โ Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) is urging households to prioritize safe, nutritious, and healthy food choices during this festive celebration.
With parties, gatherings, and gift-giving in full swing, the DOST-FNRI emphasizes the importance of making mindful decisions about food preparation to ensure everyone's health and safety.
The DOST-FNRI advises that families be conscious of the foods they serve, particularly during โNoche Buenaโ and โMedia Nocheโ. It is crucial to avoid dishes that are excessively sweet, salty, or fatty, as these can pose significant food safety risks and contribute to various health concerns.
According to the Message #8 of the DOST-FNRI Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), limit intake of salty, fried, fatty and sugar-rich foods to prevent cardiovascular diseases.
In addition to the long-term health risks, consuming unsafe food can lead to immediate health issues such as headaches, nausea, diarrhea, dehydration, and, in the worst cases, food poisoning.
The DOST-FNRI stresses the importance of ensuring food safety during meal preparation to avoid such complications.
To help families prepare healthier holiday meals, the DOST-FNRI suggests creating a meal plan that considers each dish's nutritional value.
Preparing meals at home is highly recommended, as it allows individuals to monitor the ingredients and cooking processes, ensuring that healthier choices are made.
For example, households are encouraged to buy lean cuts of meat, which contain less fat, and to incorporate more vegetables and fruits into their holiday spread.
Additionally, reducing the amount of sugar and sweeteners in desserts can significantly lower the overall calorie count and promote better health.
The Institute also recommends that families replace sugary soft drinks and ready-to-drink beverages with healthier alternatives, such as water or fresh fruit juices made from natural fruit extracts.
Furthermore, the Institute also recommends checking and visiting the DOST-FNRIโs Menu Guide Calendars as it can provide innovative, healthy, and nutritious food ideas and recipes this coming Christmas.
For example, families can try adding Ube-Cheese Palitaw Rolls to their holiday menu. With just a few simple ingredients, this delicious and nutritious twist on a classic dessert will be a festive treat everyone can enjoy this Christmas.
As Christmas is a time for celebration and spending quality time with loved ones, the DOST-FNRI reminds everyone that making healthy, safe, and nutritious food choices will allow families to enjoy the season without compromising their health.
