“Bantayi ang imong lawas! Leptospirosis can be deadly, know the warning signs and seek medical help right away. 🚨🦠”

📢
Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial infection usually spread through floodwater or soil contaminated with urine from infected animals, especially rodents.
During rainy seasons and after flooding, the risk of infection becomes much higher.

Common Symptoms Include:
• Hilanat (Fever)
• Labad sa ulo (Headache)
• Pamaol (Muscle aches/pain)
• Pagdalg sa panit (Yellowish skin)
• Pagsuka (Nausea/Vomiting)
• Pagpula sa mata (Red eyes)
• Sakit sa tiyan (Abdominal pain)
• Kalibanga (Diarrhea)

These symptoms often appear 2–14 days after exposure. Some cases can worsen quickly and lead to kidney failure, liver damage, or internal bleeding, which can be life-threatening.

🚨 When to See a Doctor:

If you have any of these symptoms, especially after stepping in floodwater, seek medical care immediately. Early treatment with antibiotics can prevent severe complications.

✔️ Prevention:
• Avoid wading in floodwater whenever possible.
• Wear boots, gloves, or protective gear when exposure is unavoidable.
• Keep your surroundings clean to discourage rodents.
• Wash your feet and legs thoroughly after contact with dirty water.

Protect yourself and your family, early action saves lives.

The “Five Keys to Safer Food” are essential principles promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) to help prevent foodborne diseases, especially during emergencies such as natural disasters, power outages, or conflict situations. In these times, access to clean water, electricity, and safe food sources can be disrupted, making proper food handling more crucial than ever.
1. Keep clean.
Washing hands frequently with safe water and soap before handling food, after using the toilet, or cleaning up waste prevents harmful germs from spreading. During emergencies, using alcohol-based sanitizers or boiled water for cleaning utensils and surfaces can help maintain hygiene even when resources are limited.
2. Separate raw and cooked foods.
Raw meats, seafood, and poultry can contain dangerous bacteria. They must be stored and prepared separately from cooked or ready-to-eat foods to prevent cross-contamination—a common cause of food poisoning when clean conditions are hard to maintain.
3. Cook food thoroughly.
Proper cooking kills most pathogens. Foods, especially meat, eggs, and seafood, should be cooked to safe internal temperatures. In emergencies, where reheating may be difficult, ensure that food is cooked completely before consumption.
4. Keep food at safe temperatures.
Food should be kept either hot (above 60°C) or cold (below 5°C) to prevent bacterial growth. When power is lost, consume perishable food first and avoid eating items left at room temperature for more than two hours.
5. Use safe water and raw materials.
Contaminated water and spoiled ingredients are major health risks. Always use boiled or treated water for cooking and cleaning, and choose food that is fresh, sealed, or properly stored.

By following these five keys, individuals and communities can significantly reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses, even in challenging emergency situations.
