🩺 Tuberculin Skin Test (PPD Test)

The PPD test—also known as the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST)—is a screening test for tuberculosis (TB). TB is a bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that most often affects the lungs, but it can also involve other parts of the body.

This test helps determine if a person has been exposed to TB bacteria. A small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) is injected just under the skin of the forearm.

After 48–72 hours, the injection site is checked by a trained healthcare professional for a reaction, which may indicate TB exposure.

The PPD test is commonly recommended for:

Healthcare workers

Close contacts of TB patients

Students or employees requiring medical clearance

Individuals with risk factors for TB

The test is safe, evidence-based, and widely used as part of TB prevention and control programs.

A positive result does not automatically mean active TB disease—further evaluation may be required.

📢 Understanding Childhood Hypertension & How to Prevent It! 💙

Did you know that high blood pressure isn’t just an adult problem? Rates of hypertension in children have nearly doubled over the past 20 years, with obesity being a major driver. Children with obesity are much more likely to develop high blood pressure compared to healthy-weight peers.

🧬 Why it happens:
• Excess body fat increases stress on the heart and blood vessels.
• Obesity disrupts hormonal and kidney systems that help regulate blood pressure.
• Some genetic factors linked to obesity (e.g., FTO, MC4R, GNPDA2) also raise the risk of higher blood pressure — especially when combined with high BMI.

💡 Prevention (What You Can Do):
✅ Healthy eating: More fruits, veggies, whole grains; less sugar and salt.
✅ Physical activity: At least 60 minutes daily of play or exercise.
✅ Limit screen time and promote active hobbies.
✅ Regular checkups: Early blood pressure screening can catch risks before they become problems — especially for children with obesity or family history.

👶 Start young — lifelong impact: Childhood hypertension often continues into adulthood, increasing risks for heart disease and kidney issues later in life. Thankfully, lifestyle changes now can make a big difference!

📌 Follow guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics and pediatric health experts to keep our kids healthy and strong! 💪

🧠 BE FAST: New Year, New Risks — Stroke Awareness Matters More Than Ever

The New Year is a time for celebration—but it is also a period when stroke risk can increase. Studies show that during holidays and year-end transitions, factors such as poor sleep, dietary excess, alcohol intake, cold weather, and delayed medical response may raise the likelihood of stroke events.

This makes early recognition especially critical.
Remember BE FAST:

B – Balance: sudden dizziness or loss of coordination
E – Eyes: sudden blurred or loss of vision
F – Face: facial drooping or uneven smile
A – Arm: arm or leg weakness, numbness on one side
S – Speech: slurred or difficult speech
T – Time: call emergency services immediately

Scientific evidence confirms that brain tissue begins to suffer irreversible damage within minutes of a stroke. Rapid treatment significantly improves survival and recovery outcomes. During the New Year period, recognizing symptoms early and acting fast can save a life—possibly your own or someone you love.

Do not ignore symptoms. Do not wait for them to pass. Time lost is brain lost.

🎄💙 A Holiday Health Reminder for Parents

The holidays are a time for fun and family, but it’s also when kids often get stomach problems and coughs or colds. With gatherings, shared food, and changing weather, children can get sick more easily.

⚠️ Please don’t ignore these signs:

Stomach issues:
• Diarrhea or vomiting
• Stomach pain
• Fever
• Your child looks weak or dehydrated
Respiratory infections:
• Cough or colds that don’t improve
• Fever
• Fast or difficult breathing
• Wheezing

👶 Why early pediatric checkups matter:
Children can get worse quickly. A pediatric consultation helps catch problems early, give the right treatment, and prevent complications.
🏠 Simple ways families can help:
• Wash hands often
• Serve clean, well-cooked food
• Encourage fluids and rest
• Bring your child to the doctor if symptoms last or worsen

💙 When in doubt, have your child checked.

A simple visit can keep small illnesses from becoming serious — and help everyone enjoy a healthier holiday season.
