na mamana ba ang glaucoma?

Q: If glaucoma runs in my family, should I be worried?

A: A family history of glaucoma increases your risk of developing the condition. It's important to have regular comprehensive eye exams, as early detection and treatment can prevent significant vision loss. Discuss your family history with your ophthalmologist to determine an appropriate screening schedule.

Q: Can swimming pools cause eye infections?

A: Yes. Chlorine and other chemicals used to disinfect pools can disrupt your eye’s protective tear film, increasing your risk of irritation and infection. Avoid swimming with contact lenses, wear swim goggles, and rinse your eyes with clean water or artificial tears after swimming.

Q: Why does sweat sting my eyes and how can I avoid it?

A: Sweat contains salt and other minerals that can irritate your eyes and blur your vision. To prevent this, wear a headband, cap, or sports sunglasses that help wick sweat away. If sweat gets in your eyes, rinse gently with clean water or lubricating drops.

Q: How do I know if my sunglasses offer true UV protection?

A: Check for labels that say “100% UV protection” or “UV400.” These block both UVA and UVB rays. Lens color or darkness doesn’t indicate protection, so don’t be fooled by darker shades. You can also have your sunglasses tested at optical shops using a UV meter.

IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR EYE EXAMS 🩺👁️

Regular eye exams are an important part of finding eye diseases early to protect your vision. When eye diseases are diagnosed in their early stages, treatment to prevent vision loss is most effective.

These include amblyopia (lazy eye, which is common in children), refractive errors (astigmatism, hyperopia, myopia, presbyopia), cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Children's eyes should be checked regularly by an eye doctor or pediatrician. Experts recommend that children have at least one eye exam between age 3 and 5 years. If your eyes are healthy and vision is good, you should have a complete exam by your ophthalmologist once in your 20s and twice in your 30s.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that adults get a complete eye examination at age 40. This is when early signs of disease or changes in vision may appear.

Some adults shouldn't wait until they are 40 to have a complete eye exam. See an ophthalmologist now if you have an eye disease or risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and family history of eye disease.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

how much screen time is "safe" for children?

WHAT’S THE ‘SAFE’ SCREEN TIME FOR MY CHILD?

"Safe" amounts of screen time for children vary by age. The World Health Organization' suggest no screen time at all for children before age 1, and very limited screen time for children for several years after that.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend no digital media use (except video-chatting) in children younger than 18 to 24 months; when children do start using screens, parents should focus on educational media. Total media time for children 2 and older should be limited to not more than 30 minutes weekly.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on how to manage your children’s screen time.

EXCESSIVE SCREEN USE HARMS CHILDREN’S EYES

Excessive screen time can negatively impact children's eye health. One of these negative effects is myopia or nearsightedness. In Asia, up to 90 percent of teenagers and adults are nearsighted (myopic) – a dramatic increase over recent generations.

Prolonged usage of computers, tablets, e-readers, and cell phones can lead to digital eye strain. Common symptoms include dry eyes, blurry vision, tearing or watery eyes, and headache. Screen use too close to bedtime can also harm children's sleep quality and disrupt their sleep.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on how to manage your children’s screen time.

Anong kinalaman ng diabetes sa mata ko?!

5 FACTS ABOUT DIABETES AND YOUR EYES 🩸👁️

Diabetes can have significant impacts on eye health. Here are some key facts to be aware of:

1️⃣ Most major eye disease from diabetes takes about 5 to 10 years to develop. However, this doesn’t mean your vision is safe during those years.
2️⃣ People with diabetes are twice as likely to develop cataracts than other adults. High blood sugar levels lead to a build-up of cells and proteins in the eye’s lens, making it cloudy.
3️⃣ Women with diabetes who become pregnant are at high risk for diabetic retinopathy and vision loss.
4️⃣ Diabetes can cause eye muscle paralysis and double vision.
5️⃣ People with diabetes may be more likely to get eye infections. That's because uncontrolled diabetes hinders your immune system's ability to fight infections.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on how to manage diabetes and prevent its eye-related complications.
