Raising awareness about hearing loss in children and what we are doing about it. We are so grateful for the families of our small group of cochlear implantees who shared their experience on how they navigate their hearing journey.

Today marks a meaningful milestone for Southern Philippines Medical Center - Official and the SPMC ORL HNS as we officially reopen our Newborn Hearing Screening Unit at the 5th Floor of IWNH Building.

This initiative reflects the product of adversities and frustrations but overcome by our shared vision of giving every child the best possible start in life. Early detection of hearing loss means early intervention, better language development, and brighter futures for the children and families we serve.

I would like to sincerely acknowledge the dedication and hard work of our Newborn Hearing Screening Unit personnel—whose passion and persistence made this a sustainable endeavor. Their commitment to excellence and compassionate care is the heart of this program.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to our hospital administration and the DOH Davao Region for their vision, guidance, and unwavering support. This project demonstrate their strong commitment to preventive care and quality health services for mothers and babies in our community.

Next goal: Category D Hearing Center for SPMC 🙂

We are celebrating World Hearing Day! This year our focus is on schoolchildren and as parents and caregivers, we have to be aware of the different warning signs of hearing loss, seek medical consult when needed, and be advocates of healthy hearing habits.

This would help our children connect with others, reduce the long term impact of hearing loss, and empower those needing devices to embrace their disability.

🌍 International Cochlear Implant Day – February 25

Today, we celebrate the power of sound, the promise of technology, and the resilience of those who hear the world differently.

Cochlear implants don’t just restore hearing — they reconnect lives. Whether it’s a child hearing their parent’s voice for the first time or an adult rediscovering music, every activation is a moment of transformation.

Let’s raise awareness, share stories, and support access to hearing care for all.

Hearing loss is on the rise and it is more common than you think. Loud sounds can damage your ears, leading to hearing loss or ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

Check out WHO’s tips to protect your hearing and care for your ears:

✅ Protect your hearing
✅ Get regular hearing check-ups
✅ Use assistive technology if recommended
✅ Request a hearing test for your children or anyone above age 50

Browsing social media affects girls and boys differently, according to new research from Cambridge University Press & Assessment 📱

Based on data from thousands of 15-year-olds across 10 countries, the study found that the more time girls spend browsing social media, the lower their body image and life satisfaction scores tend to be, while boys’ scores remain relatively similar, regardless of how much time is spent browsing social media.

The findings highlight how different types of digital activity can affect young people’s wellbeing in gender-specific ways, raising important questions for parents, educators, and policymakers.

What Is Dysphagia and When Is It Serious?

Dysphagia means difficulty swallowing. It may feel like food is stuck in the throat or chest.

⚠️ See an ENT specialist if you have:
🔹 Pain when swallowing
🔹 Frequent choking/coughing when eating
🔹 Unexplained weight loss
🔹 Recurrent/progressive sore throat
🔹 Difficulty of breathing

These may indicate serious conditions requiring urgent evaluation.
