โ€œMula Kamalayan Tungo sa Gawa: Pag-unlad ng Autism-OK Philippines.โ€

The 30th Philippine National Autism Consciousness Week (19 to 25 January 2026), calls on society to move beyond basic understanding of autism and toward concrete, sustained action that makes everyday environments more inclusive, accessible, and supportive. This annual observance, established through Proclamation No. 711, seeks to promote genuine and organic acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation of persons on the autism spectrum in Philippine society and the global community. It highlights shared responsibility among government, institutions, families, communities, and self-advocates in ensuring that Filipinos on the autism spectrum can thrive, participate meaningfully, and live with dignity.

The Davao City Health Office (CHO), through the Tropical Disease Prevention and Control Unit, clarified on Monday that there are no active cases of filariasis in the city.

Despite this, Dabawenyos are still urged to practice 4T or the Taob, Taktak, Tuyo at Takip, on possible mosquito breeding sites to prevent the spread of filariasis and other diseases.

Filariasis, or lymphatic filariasis (commonly known as elephantiasis), is a tropical disease transmitted through mosquito bites. It is caused by parasitic roundworms (Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi) carried by Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex mosquitoes.

Dr. Gerwin Emmanuel V. Butiong, Physician Coordinator of the CHOโ€™s Tropical Disease Prevention and Control Unit, told the Madayaw Program over city-owned Davao City Disaster Radio, that mosquitoes become infected by ingesting microfilariae (immature larvae) from an infected personโ€™s blood. These worms then lodge onto the lymphatic system, potentially causing severe swelling, fever, body aches, and chills.

Butiong added that some patients are asymptomatic, and clinical findings of present symptoms is not enough to diagnose a patient with filariasis.

โ€œNon-specific talaga ang filariasis. Dili dayon madetect based on clinical findings sa mga simtomas na kalintura, sakit sa lawas, chills. Kinahanglan gyud nga i-laboratory test nato na (Filariasis is a non-specific disease. The patient needs to undergo laboratory tests as clinical findings on associated symptoms are not enough to diagnose filariasis),โ€ he said.

Davao City has been declared as Filaria-free since 2018. There were sporadic cases, but these had already been treated and there are no active cases of filariasis in the city.

The CHOโ€™s tropical division identified 10 districts in the city that had cases of filariasis.

These erstwhile filaria-endemic districts include Buhangin, Bunawan, Sasa, Toril A, Toril B, Tugbok, Marilog, Calinan, Paquibato, and Baguio.

Butiong said that these filaria cases were already treated, and contact tracing results revealed that the patients had travel history outside the city.

Dabawenyos may have their laboratory test for filariasis at the City Health Office. Test-kits are also available at the barangay and district health centers, especially in the identified filaria-endemic districts.

Medicines are also available patients who might test positive with filariasis. CIO

The Davao City Health Office (CHO) announced that prophylactic medicines to prevent leptospirosis are available from local health centers.

CHO Head Dr. Tomas Miguel Ababon made the assurance amid the rainy season, when incidents of leptospirosis infection tend to increase. He emphasized that health centers do not only provide the necessary medicines but are also manned by health personnel who are ready to assist individuals at risk.

Dr. Ababon admitted that leptospirosis remains a serious health concern in Davao City.

โ€œKaron ting-ulan, panahon sa bagyo og tig-ulan, sa bahin sa panlawas maglikay ta sa tubig baha. Sa tinuod lang, delikado ang leptospirosis karon kay daghan og mamatay kung dili dayon matambalan ( Now that it's rainy and typhoon season, we should avoid floodwaters. Leptospirosis is dangerous and can be deadly if not treated immediately)," Ababon warned.

He advised the public to stay indoors during heavy rains and avoid stepping into floodwaters. If unavoidable, wearing rain boots is highly recommended.

But if you do get exposed, our health centers are equipped with prophylaxis medicines available citywide. No matter which health center you go to, we have medicine for leptospirosis.),โ€ he said.

He also encouraged residents to visit health centers if they experience symptoms. Even if a doctor is not available, midwives can guide patients and provide initial care.

โ€œIn case you feel symptoms, go to the health center. If there are no doctors available, our midwives are trained to assist and refer patients properly,โ€ he added.

Ababon strongly urged those exposed to floodwaters to monitor their health and act quickly if symptoms occur.

โ€œPalihog lang, kung nakalusong mo sa baha unya pipila ka adlaw nga naa nay kalintura, adto dayon og health center. Taas kaayo og mortality rate ang leptospirosis (Please, if you've waded in floodwaters and developed a fever within a few days, immediately visit a health center. Leptospirosis has a very high mortality rate),โ€ he stressed.

Meanwhile, Ababon also noted that the CHO is intensifying its dengue interventions. He mentioned that the city will soon implement citation tickets for individuals who fail to clean potential mosquito breeding sites. CIO

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan! ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ
