Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of sharing my experience and expertise in performing liver ultrasound with my fellow gastroenterologists. This was held at St. Lukes Medical Center in BGC.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is becoming a foundational tool that every clinician especially gastroenterologists should be proficient in. It supports more timely and accurate decision-making, enabling us to provide better patient care. This skill also enhances collaboration with other physicians involved in our patients’ treatment.

Congratulations to the organizers for initiating this event to further enhance gastrointestinal diseases management.

Early screening is key 🔑

People under age 50 have been appearing increasingly at doctors’ offices in the past few decades, complaining of blood in their stool, abdominal trouble or unexplained weight loss.

The diagnosis: colorectal cancer. And by that time, it was often too late.

But that paradigm is finally starting to shift, at least for patients in their 40s.

There has been a jump in people aged 45 to 49 getting screened for colorectal cancer, after recent medical guidelines lowered the screening age for those at average risk.

As a result, the disease is being caught sooner, when it is more curable and the treatment is less grueling, according to new research from the American Cancer Society.

New cases of liver cancer—the sixth most common form of the disease—will rise to 1.52 million a year from 870,000 if current trends continue, according to data from the Global Cancer Observatory published in the Lancet medical journal.

It is also the third deadliest of all cancers, with the study predicting it would take 1.37 million lives by the middle of the century.
However three out of five cases of liver cancer could be prevented, the international team of experts said.

The risk factors are drinking alcohol, viral hepatitis and a build-up of fat in the liver linked to obesity called MASLD, which was previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. |

Davao Delivered.

We are honored to have the presence of the Hepatology Society of the Philippines' Board of Directors as we celebrate World Hepatitis Day.

On July 26th, we conducted a viral hepatitis workshop for doctors to enhance their knowledge about viral hepatitis. This event saw the highest number of attendees so far.

Today, July 28th, we provided free hepatitis screening, ultrasound, liver FibroScan, and health education to the community. Our goal is to raise awareness and contribute to the eradication of this long-standing problem.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Hepatology Society of the Philippines for traveling all the way down south to join us in this celebration. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of our partners in the pharmaceutical industry.

Together, we can beat viral hepatitis!

Did you know that liver cancer remains one of the leading cancers in the Philippines?

Can we effectively combat it? Absolutely! — especially with early diagnosis.

For example, this 76-year-old woman with liver cirrhosis from chronic fatty liver was found to have a small tumor through imaging and rising AFP levels.

I did microwave ablation, which successfully destroyed the tumor. A month later, her AFP normalized, and imaging showed no active cancer.

This highlights the importance of early detection in improving treatment outcomes.

Know your risks, stay proactive, and let’s work together to beat liver cancer!

Hope you found this helpful.
