โ€œIf we want new nurses, we must not only invest in their skills, but also in their humanityโ€ฆ it isnโ€™t about a performance matrix, it is about humanity.โ€

Thus said Nurse Lemmwell Bryan Adante, MAN in his research presentation before the delegates of the largest network of Filipino nurses last October 22, 2025.

His paper titled โ€œNurses in the Face of A Pandemic: Basis for Skills Training and Enhancement,โ€ has identified the association between demographics and nursesโ€™ level of performance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study found out that married nurses have the lowest version in terms of skills, recommending its improvement.

Additionally, the study highlighted the need for attitudes among nurses, such as passion and resourcefulness to be reinforced through emotional support and a supportive work environment.

In preparation for emerging and re-emerging diseases, Adante called for the development of comprehensive training modules that will gear up nurses in the face of outbreaks.

Together in Service: Strengthening Partnerships through Nursing Council Grand Rounds

The San Pedro College โ€“ School of Nursing conducted its Nursing Council Grand Rounds across affiliated agencies in the northern part of Davao Region. This initiative aims to enhance collaboration with partner institutions and to evaluate the quality of studentsโ€™ clinical learning experiences for the current semester, ensuring the continuity and improvement of their learning in preparation for the upcoming 2nd semester.

The rounds were headed by Ms. Etta C. Catacutan, RN, MN, RTRP, Associate Dean, together with the Level 3 and 4 Clinical Coordinators, who worked closely with partner hospitals to align the studentsโ€™ clinical exposures with the schoolโ€™s learning objectives and standards of practice.

The first stop was at Good Shepherd Hospital in Panabo City, where the nursing council was warmly welcomed by Nursing Service staff.
Students eagerly shared their positive experiences and expressed appreciation for the guidance and support they have received throughout their clinical duties.

The Nursing Council also visited Tagum Medical City, where they were graciously welcomed by Mr. Winston A. Villegas, RN, Chief Nurse, and Ms. Jessica M. Asiseo, RN, MAN, Assistant Chief Nurse.

The visit was further graced by the Davao Regional Medical Center (DRMC) team, led by The Professional Education Training Unit, Ms. Loirene Rabaca, Training Assistant, and Mr. Christian Bernaldez, RN, MAN, OIC Chief Nurse, together with Mr. Rudolph Derick D. Millan, RN, MAN, Clinical Nurse Coordinator. An open forum was conducted to discuss ways to enhance studentsโ€™ clinical opportunities and maximize their learning experiences.

The DRMC Nursing Service team also accompanied the Nursing Council representatives during rounds in various clinical areas covered by the school.

Additionally, the council visited the studentsโ€™ dormitories to ensure their comfort, safety, and well-being, especially following the recent earthquake in the region.

The Nursing Council extends its heartfelt gratitude to all partner agencies for their warm hospitality, continued collaboration, and dedication to providing quality training environments for SPC student nurses.

Together, we uphold excellence in nursing education and service.

San Pedro College โ€“ School of Nursing (SPC-SON) secured 3rd place among 12 competing schools in the Battle of the Nightingales (BOTN): An Inter-School Nursing Quiz Bowl โ€“ National Championship, held at Grand Ballroom C, Shangri-La The Fort, Oct. 20.

Guided by their coach, Raymundo III Doce, participants Harold Christian Benoya, Maxine Chua, Athena Grace Nicholas, and Paolo Jose Louis Traspe battled during the said event.

โ€œThe overall experience of the competition was something that PJ, Harold, and I truly treasured. Itโ€™s something we can bring with us โ€” not only through our classes or the board exams โ€” but something we can always look back on even after college,โ€ said Nicholas.

Nicholas also shared that the team prepared extensively for the competition by conducting simulation drills, which helped them gain confidence and become more familiar with the quiz environment.

โ€œWe had countless simulations where our coach, Dr. Doce, devotedly tried to recreate the atmosphere of the nationals. Those sessions felt like mini quiz bowls themselves,โ€ she added.

Despite their success, the participants admitted that balancing academics with intensive preparation was challenging, as they had to juggle multiple concepts while working under time constraints.

Nevertheless, the team expressed profound gratitude to the School of Nursing and their coach for their unwavering support and dedication.

โ€œOur mentor is someone whoโ€™s already preoccupied with so many important responsibilities in his career, yet he still set aside time for us. Weโ€™re very grateful because, even in those few hours, we were able to make the most out of our sessions,โ€ the participant expressed.

Traspe also left an inspiring message for fellow SPCians, emphasizing the values of perseverance and determination.

โ€œAnyone can be a champion. It doesnโ€™t matter where you started, what resources you have, or how many times youโ€™ve stumbled. What matters is the decision to learn and keep working toward your goals. Champions are ordinary people who decided their dreams were worth the effort,โ€ he shared.

SPC-SON was declared champion last September in the BOTN Inter-School Nursing Quiz Bowl.
